Missed Opportunities

Darkwing: Me personally I think any one of those 4 players would be nice to have. However, if I had to pick one I would have picked Asik. I think he and Kanter are friends. I think Asik is a great defender and good rebounder. I think his offense is improving and I think he would have been a great third big. We can't get him because we have three complete trash players now.

Certainly a not seeing the forest for the trees response.

What would signing Mayo, Calderon, Copeland and trading for Asik accomplish for the Jazz?

Reasons to hate the trade.
1. OJ Mayo gone
2. Omer Asik about to be gone.
3. Jose Calderon gone
4. Chris Copeland gone

This is just day one and because we wasted all of our cap space on two guys who suck donkey balls and one guy whose had 3 ACL surgeries. All year long we are going to miss opportunities in order to get 2 first round picks that will likely be in the mid 20s. I really hate this trade. Lindsey panicked.

Like it or not we are tanking this season. How do those players help in that regard? This was a good deal for the Jazz.

Scram: why is it when somebody raises an argument people don't like they call them an 11 year old. Does that make you feel superior in some way? Most likely I've been a jazz fan longer than you have been alive. Can't I legitimately hate this trade? I believe time will prove that the Jazz made a huge mistake because other opportunities will be available that we missed out on because of this ridiculous trade. I think its bad to get rid of 24 million dollars in cap space for what will most likely be picks in the mid 20's.

To continue, the Jazz have to spend the money, anyway. The likelihood of getting an unprotected '14 pick is extremely low. Warriors are walking a thin line with players with questionable health history.

And the Jazz will be in the exact same position next year, and gained two unprotected draft picks in the process. In the position the Jazz are in, that's the better asset to have than a productive third big getting paid starter money.

Ben10 I love how you just assume that the three losers we picked up today wont play. i have no faith that will be the case. Regardless if you could add real good players you should. Now we can't. Mind you this is just day 1. Numerous additional opportunities are going to be available between now and the trade deadline and we just pissed them away for nothing.

I hope that Rush does play, He is a carrier 41% 3 point shooter and a very good defender. He fills a need that the FO was looking for in a wing defender that can shoot. As for the other 2 I see them both getting some time of the bench but they aren't part of the teams long term plans. Plus we got picks all for giving up Kevin Murphy.

What you don't seem to understand is that all the guys you listed there are 3rd to 4th tier players that well never lead there teams to a championship level. Plus if we signed any of them we are stuck with there contracts after this year when we start need that money to sign the young guys. Look ahead.

You've only made reference so far to middling to average players. Those aren't really opportunities. Having a chance to get an average player is Tuesday in the NBA.

Tigg3r: I have seen this argument posted all day and it makes no sense to me. The argument being this trade helps us tank. It does no such thing. These three players may or may not help us win or lose games. In my opinion the same five or six guys we had before are still the same five or six guys that will play. The three losers picked up today don't help or hurt our tanking. The just stop us from getting anything better that may come along.

Also, Jazz lose leverage if they go into the beginning of the year under the payroll threshold. Teams will know that and ofter less of an incentive. Hard to get more incentive than two unrestricted picks on a team with a questionable coach and low level all star talent.

Shaggy: That is not the argument I was making, its just a strawman. I'm not saying we could have gotten all four of these players, what I'm saying is that with cap space the jazz could select the one or two players that would really help us. Whether its Copeland, Asik, Millsap, etc. We can't do anything now but watch as teams under the cap get better players and better picks the close we come to the trade deadline next year.

Fair enough, bad behavior on my part. But dude... even the other opportunities you directly cite suck. And these other mystery opportunities out there you mention don't actually exist. You realize these contracts the Jazz took on last one year, right? The Jazz essentially agreed to hold another team's crap bag for a season that was already a total tank/growing opportunity for the youngsters and got two 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks. They sacrificed nothing except Greg Miller's money (which I don't care about) and got nicely rewarded for it.

I love it. I love everything about it. And in 2017, when Steph Curry's ankle is long gone, Bogut is 2 years into retirment, and the Warriors have slipped right back into the lottery you are going to love it too.
