Mock Draft Exercise #1 - Pre-NCAA Tournament

It's wild to discredit someone going from no experience to starter on a Eurocup team at a very young 18 in 4 years of playing experience.

I was actually making a joke about Anthony Black, superstar HS WR which obviously means his obviously horrible jumper is going to go in.

There is something to a player starting late and an increased ability to grow, there is also something to having an extremely long way to go in order to be NBA level. I'm not watching his games, so I won't be the claim to be the expert on him, but the highlights didn't really catch my eye and his production won't catch anyone's eye compared to other prospects who are also playing in Eurocup/similar levels of competition.

There is hardly any talk about how good he is at basketball and that is what concerns me the most. These narrative driven arguments mean something, but I think we always have a tendency to make them overblown. His trajectory is impressive, but is it possible to mention that having very low production at a lower level of european competition is questionable without discrediting the first part?

Eurocup teams often start 18 year olds because they aren't good at basketball

The more you talk about how he starts, the more it gives me the impression that you're trying to avoid talking about his actual play and production. It does not change the facts about his current level of play. A guy who averages 4 and 4 as a starter is not much different from a bench guy who averages 4 and 4. If this was Euroleague or one of the major domestic leagues you might have a point, but Eurocup and ABA is not a high level of competition. First round 18 year old NBA prospects that play in Eurocup and ABA are usually better than he is. Of course he can make up the gap with his physical tools and faster growth, but that doesn't change the fact that he's behind. Weak draft (which I think this is) could justify him being a first round pick, but I like Sorber as a C prospect much more if he's healthy and think he's both safer and has a higher ceiling.

There's months left of basketball for Beringer, so I guess we'll see how his play trends.
