The Supreme Court will announce whether it has found a fundamental right to same-sex marriage any day now, dramatically altering the course of gay rights history. But a much lower-profile case that is currently wending its way up through the federal courts could offer the Supreme Court an opportunity for another potentially transformative decision on LGBT rights as soon as next year.

The case — about whether the California state prison system should be required to pay for an inmate’s sex reassignment surgery — may change public perceptions about medical care for transgender people at a time when Caitlyn Jenner and other high-profile trans people are lending more visibility to the group.

So I have no problem at all with someone getting reassignment surgery, but I say HELL THE **** NO to having the state pay for elective surgery of ANY kind. This would open the flood gates for all kind of ******** from breast augmentation to dick-enhancement surgery. So vote **** NO on "will the state be forced to pay for elective surgery".

I am okay with people wanting this surgery I am okay with insurance paying for this surgery. When you go to prison you lose rights. One of those is medical procedures that are not necessary to keep you alive. I am sure she is not living her life to the fullest as in unhappy until she has this surgery but she is in prison for murder. I think this is a wasted effort from the transgender movement. They should pick a better battle. If you didnt get the surgery before committing a crime it is going to have to wait until you get out. Hormone treatment on the other hand I think needs to be maintained especially if the prisoner started the treatments before entering prison.

I agree. Get it on your own. The state/tax payers should be under 0 obligation to pay for this. Absolutely not.

I believe the argument being used by the inmates is that it isn't elective surgery, but rather is medically necessary.

From the ever-reliable wikipedia:

"The current medical approach to treatment for persons diagnosed with gender identity disorder is to support the individual in physically modifying the body to better match the psychological gender identity. This approach is based on the concept that their experience is based in a medical problem correctable by various forms of medical intervention."

Even then my answer is a resounding no.

This is not from an active injury or some other medical emergency. I have no interest as a tax payer in "fixing" or "repairing" this, or anyone elses, gender/identity crisis in a jail setting.

In a non jail setting I would be open to this being covered by insurance. I think a more interactive chose your own approach should be taken with insurance. One could chose to have this and similar procedures covered on their individual policy and as such pay a corresponding premium.

I'd feel the same if it was a prisoner with a significant physical deformity that could be medically corrected. Even if that physical deformity caused them severe emotional problems and was considered a contributing factor in why they engaged in criminal activity.

Their criminal behavior doesn't entitle them to any medical benefits that they would not be entitled to if they were not imprisoned.
