I still don't understand this money argument. How is a shortened 19/20 AND a shortened 20/21 better on the league financially than a cancelled 19/20 and a full 20/21?

Also, the league would need a 2/3 majority of owners to agree to change the playoff seeding to the 1 - 16, cross-conference format. It looks as though just under half the owners currently support that idea. Sorry, Lebron.

If GM's want the season to end no later than October 1 then why are they even on board with restarting? Because there's no chance in hell of that happening under any of the formats suggested.

They won’t shorten 2021... just start late... later they go they better chance they can have fans again.

They’ve talked about starting the season around Christmas Day and getting away from competing with the NFL for the majority of their season. This gives them cover to do exactly that.
 
Recent reports have the season ending around 10/31. Seems extreme to me. End the season late October, start again in December, truncate next year, which means packing as many games in as possible, so more back to back games, more 4 games in 5 or 6 night stretches. I think this kind of thing affected the Jazz chances back in the shortened season at the end of the 90's with increased back to backs having more of an impact on older players, Malone and Stockton at the time. I wish they could just start the playoffs now, end around mid-September, then pick up again maybe 3 weeks later than normal for next Season, and extend next year a bit further into the summer to get a "regular" season, then fully back to normal the year after.

I still think it is time to shorten the season to 70 or 72 games total and eliminate resting games for the players most fans are paying to see.
 
It's a bad mistake.

Look, we as a nation (as a planet) have been going through a pandemic. We deal as best we can and if losing the ends of a hockey or basketball season is in the cards....so what? I am the biggest b-ball fan on planet Earth and do I need to see some phony ending to the 2019/2020 season? No. Silver should be presenting a plan for a proper 82 game 2020/2021 season to start as it is supposed to in October.

The 2019/2020 season is over. The NY Knicks have been legitimately crowned the 2019/2020 NBA Champions. Why does Silver want to mess with something we all have accepted? Why does he want to add another ending to a season that has already ended? Knicks beat the Hawks in the final game played in 2019/2020 season. The winner of the final game played in any major sport is always crowned the Champion of that season. The Knicks won the final game of the season. Let's now move on to next season and see if the Knicks can repeat as Champions.

This proposal to create a phony summer playoff tournament takes away from the Knicks legitimate Championship and it will delegitimize next season's champion due to a compressed season. Silver is destroying TWO seasons. Stop the nonsense. Let's start next season in October when it is supposed to and let the teams have a go at taking away the Larry O'Brien Trophy from the Knicks. Bring it on. We are ready.

This is the correct answer. A large portion of revenue, especially for small market teams, comes from fans watching in person (tickets, food, souvenirs, parking, etc.). If they can postpone the season until fans are in attendance then they are much better off doing so.

But does this take into account TV ratings? TV money is the real revenue for any sports league. (I don't know the NBA numbers, but I know NFL gets billions, yes, billions from the various networks.) If NBA season is now to be moved to summer months when TV ratings drop dramatically, what becomes of TV money? Why would TNT pay hundreds of millions of dollars for a product that is now delivering half the viewers?
