NBA TV: Enes Kanter = Jeff Ruland

On the NBA Draft Review Show on NBA TV they compared Kanter to Jeff Ruland. Oy Vey!

I only remember Ruland from his last go around with the Sixers in the early 90s, when he had terrible foot injuries like Yao and Walton and could barely play at all. But, in glancing at his career bio and stats, it is not as horrific a comparison as I feared.

Ruland was the 2nd pick overall in the 1980 draft, and between 1982-1986 averaged approximately 19 points and 11 rebounds. He was a 6'10' and somewhere between 240-260. His career averages over 8 seasons were 17 and 10, including his last year when he averaged 1.1ppg.

After reading that, I can see the comparison. Personally, I'd take those career numbers from Kanter, but I'll also pray that his feet remain perfect and he plays 10+ seasons.

Yeh i was thinking who the heck is jeff ruland, judging by stats he was a respectable big man, though he led the league in turnovers once, 342 in one season that is a lot.

....Ruland would be an upgrade to any center the Jazz have ever had! If we had Ruland in his prime with Deron Williams still our point guard....we would have already won a championship! As long as Jordan was not playing in his prime!

...of course, this is a slight exaggeration.

The best comparison I've ever heard was to Irwin Fletcher of the Lakers in the 80s. He was a bit of an unknown but Chick Hearn had some good things to say: "He's 6-5, with the afro 6-9. 4 Million dollars a year sure..but he's worth every penny. Fletch, he defines grace under pressure."

He also spent some time in Provo, I believe.

Off subject, kind of, but I happened to look at my Mother-In-Law's family history over the weekend and realized her great grandpa was named Irwin Fletcher.

I bet his middle name was Poon.

If Kanter has half the toughness of Ruland, the Jazz are in good shape. When Ruland played for the Bullets with Rick Mahorn, Celtic radio broadcaster Johnny Most nicknamed them "McFilthy and McNasty". I don't see Favors being McFilthy.

If he can be anything like Zebo or Marc Gasol, we'll be set.

Heck, if he could just give us Memo like production we'll be fine. We severely missed his rebounding and scoring last year. Millsap and Al refuse to box out and are allergic to rebounds.

Ruland was a flat out stud in the paint. I saw a game when he played for the bullets where he just killed the Lakers when they had Kareem. He was like a bowling ball in the lane bouncing off defenders. I don't know if Kanter will ever be the offensive player Ruland was, but he might be able to rebound like him.

I hope Kanter grows a pornstache like Ruland. That would be awesome.

...ouch! Thought he had better hands than that! Sounds like Ostertag had better hands....and I didn't think that was possible!
