People using RT absolutely baffle me. It’s the dumbest scoring criteria possible and eliminates any sense of accuracy. RT is known to inflate their scores.

Accurate? Arent they both just aggregate #'s from users?

The internet is just full of people who review bomb stuff nowadays so I dont even bother to look at aggregate numbers.

Two things…one calling a movie simply good or bad is not going to lead to anything resembling an accurate indication of how good the film is or isn’t. Add in the fact that it’s pretty much been proven that RT has had manipulations of reviews and therefore scores for some films and it leads to what I’m talking about. Think Longlegs last summer which had like a 98% after a few days or week in the theater but worse and more obvious. And that movie is ****ing horrendous.

Finished Season 3 of Squid Games.

I really liked the series. Ive seen a lot of negative reviews of Season 2/3, but I like them just as much as season 1.

Seasons 2 and 3 just didn't progress the show any further.

I get trying to come to a sensible resolution, but it was a yawn fest right til the end.

No great twists unlike season 1.

They could have done much more with it imo.

The other big take away from The Report for me was a universal truth. Those with power are concerned principally with power and not concerned with truth.

I have seen the same patterns of behavior on a smaller scale but with no less intensity in my own life. Management at the massive public health service I worked for have no interest in being told the truth, had no interest in anything resembling ethics, they were only interested in power and control.

It is sad human truth, those who should not wield power are the ones that seek it.

Watched a bunch of films streaming recently…

Plane: Gerard Butler—love this guy’s mindless films. On the Butler scale, I’d give it a 7.2. On a regular scale, more like a 6.2. Bear the end there’s a scene in which he somehow flies a plane 50 miles while at 155mph in just one minute! The guy is a marvel.

The Holdovers: I absolutely loved this. I haven’t seen Dead Poet’s Society since the theatre but I suppose it’s quite similar. Giamatti and his supporting cast were fantastic. I’d give it an 8.2.

Blue Ruin: The use of silence and simple conversations in this revenge tale are very strong. There’s a scene about 60% of the way through in which the protagonist’s decisions hurt the film imo. I realize people could do anything in high stress moments but it just felt a little bit unbelievable. Still, it’s one of the better more recent revenge tales. I’d give it a 7.3.

Companion: I went in with low expectations and this exceeded them quite easily. The less you know the better…I’ll just say it gets better the further it goes along. 7.4.

Insomnia (the foreign, original): Not sure if I liked it more or less than the Nolan version. This one was certainly more perverse and ****ed up. I’d give it a 7.3 which is about the same as I’d give the Pacino/Williams version.

I enjoyed the Holdovers, Paul Giamatti has such a watchable quality and he's been in so many great films.
