What's new

Netflix recs?

Started watching Cross on Amazon Prime. It's based on the James Patterson Alex Cross novels, about an African American psychologist/detective, there were also a couple of movies made from them starring Morgan Freeman. Aldis Hodges is great, I'm 2 episodes in and I'm not sure about the story yet.

Check out the director's followup, Green Room. A punk band plays a gig in rural Oregon, turns out to be a Nazi bar. (There are actually a ****-load of Nazis in rural Oregon, if you don't know.) First time I actually wanted to see Patrick Stewart die a horrible death.
I’ve seen it. Very solid.

Watched Happy Gilmore 2. Loved it. I’d give it a 7.4 overall. Much, much better than I expected.
I'm glad to hear that as I've heard so many mixed and frankly ****** reviews but the original is one of my favor of the Adam Sandler early schlock movies. I'll queue that one up.

I’m not saying it amazing btw. I had low expectations. But it easily surpassed them.
Nice. We're watching them this weekend. We like to watch the ones leading up to a sequel first if we can.

Just like we have a Nobody viewing party with our kids planned before going to see the sequel. Nobody was so ****ing good. Can't wait for Nobody 2.

Make sure to come in here and share your thoughts on both. I too loved Nobody and thought the first Happy Gilmore was one of the GOATs

Finally finished the YOU series.

A bit sad really, no more episodes ever.

Kinda like when you’re sending your kids off to college.

You don’t always enjoy having them, but it’s sad to see them go.

Half an hour into “Untamed” and you got an Aussie (Bana) and a Kiwi (Sam Neil) doing their best to imitate American accent and trying to solve a murder on the Yosemite.

I just can’t help but laugh.. lol..

This is like watching Kate Winslet (English) trying to solve the murder on the Mare of Easttown all over again.

Also a little pet peeve of mine…

Why is it always the white hero/heroine trying to solve a murder with a minority race actor/actress as the side kick (or lesser roles)?

- Bana with Untamed… (Latino sidekick)

- Foster with True detective (American Indian characters)

- Daniel Craig with Knives out (the Latino help)

- The Residence - detective is black but side kick is Asian.

Is this like a new “trend” or something?

No it has been a trend since these kinds of movies and shows existed. Look at the Lethal Weapon movies from the 80's/90's. This along with the White Savior movies are the norm (Dances with Wolves for an old example, or the Dances with Wolves remake called "Avatar", as another example).

I seem to notice it more and more since the “Oscars so white” movement though.. it’s like the main protagonist remain white but they try to add “flavors” to it by including other minorities (Latino, American Indians, Asians) - rather than Blacks who used to get these “lesser roles” in years past.

Well yeah, Hollywood does that, follows the fickle whims of social change. Now they need a token minority, can be black but asian or others are better, or make it deeply entrenched in the minority culture, so it has asians, for example, in their "natural habitat" or whatever they think will feel more asian to the audience, oh, and now it needs a LGBTQ+ person and better yet an open and preferably sexual relationship to round things out. I have no issues with any of this, I am more concerned about if they are telling a good story, but so often these things have nothing to do with the story. I have to ask my wife because I cannot remember what the show was we watched recently, but they had an extended kissing scene between 2 guys and some nudity, for a pretty long stretch, and it had nothing at all to do with the story, so we just said "well that just happened I guess", and my daughter, who is bi, said "that was stupid, why add that in?" It has become simply the price of admission to get a major studio to front your movie or TV show.

Yeah i forgot to add the LGBTQ+ category to my list… no show is complete nowadays without a Latino/Black/Asian/Mixed-Race LGBTQ+ teenager or Gen-Z couple who’s a walking billboard championing the woke movement in the story somewhere.. lol..

It’s like playing whack-a-mole now watching these shows … whoop there it is!!!!
