Nets think they can sign Deron in 2012

Jazz should go after Tayshaun Prince this summer if they can make money available. He'll be 31 and his numbers haven't declined.

Dwight Howard in 2012-13. KOC would have to work some magic, but I think it could be done. Look at what Utah has to offer Howard. A stud young core that is willing to work hard and play their roles, and an ownership/management wanting to chase championships.

D-Will, Dwight, Millsap, and CJ would only be about $46 million. That would be more than enough for the Jazz to use like the Lakers do to convince solid veterans to sign for next to nothing. "Want a championship? Come to Utah now!"

Howard knows this and should seriously entertain every offer Utah puts up if it is championship rings he really wants.

I suppose but I don't see him leaving sunny Orlando for Utah. And I think Orlando will revamp their team year to year to appease. That, or some other team (Lakers?) would make some trade to get him. But yes, Deron, Hayward, Miles, Millsap and Howard is a pretty studly foundation.

The Jazz cannot offer him 19 million dollars. Nor can any team in the league. The people writing these articles are just trying to drum up controversy without looking at the bare facts. Guys like Howard, Paul, and Deron have to leave astronomical sums of money on the table just for the privilege of starting new and exciting lives early. Alternatively, they can wait one whole year, get that money, and then start those same new exciting lives a year later.

If anything happens we'll see a repeat of this Melo fiasco. Probably with Paul since his team is horrific. But no way the Jazz or Orlando deal their stars early.

Like I said, KOC would have to work his magic. The easiest play would be trading straight up for AJ (expiring) (if Orlando's hand was pushed to get something for nothing), or to trade AJ for a TPE and then acquire Dwight. There will be a few willing teams with cap space.

There is no magic to work with the Magic. Orlando is never going to trade Howard. Just like the Jazz will never trade Deron. And neither of those guys will force trades. Paul might, though, very quietly. And New Orleans at least has some motivation to deal him considering they're close to a total rebuild.

Why?

How often do superstars get traded while in their prime? Melo's been "on the verge" of being traded for months now but it's mostly just media hype.

The answer is always money.

For the teams: Those guys are the face of the franchise and crucial to longterm stability. Everything from season tickets to postseason revenue depends on them, and that's to say nothing of corporate sponsorships and television contracts. They are well protected in the ETO situations because the players have to leave so much money on the table. All logic points to the players not exercising the ETO's and the teams fighting to sign their stars to longterm extensions once the new CBA is in place.

For the players: Why would Deron/Howard/Paul opt out of 18 to 19 million dollars? The next contract they could sign will be for substantially less money. And they're all young and in their prime. So common sense says they play out that year (12/13), make a fortune, and then sign whatever contract most benefits them in the next CBA. The Melo situation is different because he's still eligible to sign a highly lucrative extension under the present CBA.

Utah and Orlando are good enough that they'll push their chips in the middle and hope their stars are willing to stick it out for the long haul. New Orleans is in a tougher spot. Uncertain management, a disgruntled star, a bad team, declining players. They're probably headed toward a total rebuild so I can see a Paul Sweepstakes. But not with the other two guys.

I'm more than convinced Utah is gonna make T-shawn their #1 target during the offseason.. to replace AK

I appreciate what you're saying, but your entire argument hinges on money being the only factor. Howard could opt out of his $19.2mm final year and take $17.4 from the Jazz. That's not a huge drop. To be completely fair, he would also lose out on the additional 2.5% Bird Rights raise per year (10.5% max in O vs. 8% in Jazz uni), and a possible sixth year to the deal (which I imagine Orlando would be more than happy to include).

The question Howard has to answer is if he want to win or if he want to make a few extra million per year. He'll have made over $60mm plus endorsements when the option comes, and will make another $100mm over the next 5-6. Is $2mm per enough to keep him on a team without much of a chance at a ring? Plus, resigning a maximum extension will just make it that much harder for Orlando to attract the talent needed in The Big 3 age.

Howard loves Orlando and likely stays. But if you were him would money be the only factor?
