What's new

New all star game format

I can see why they still want to keep the 12 from East and 12 from West thing. There is currently an exodus of player from East to West. Had they gone with 'pick any players', that's gonna make it even more attractive for players wanting to move West.

By giving equal chance to the East it's saying to the players "If you want to be a perennial all star why don't you move East"? (i.e., the Hayward to BOS move)

That is most likely part of it and a very good reason.

Lol, how is that a good reason or even relevant?

Butler, Melo, George were all TRADED to the west. They didn't decide to move west. Nobody is moving west because they want to be west. Millsap went to Denver, but not because they are in the west. Players pick their teams based on money, winning, opportunities to play and so on. Just because the Lakers happen to be in the west, doesn't make west a deciding factor.

I doubt there is a single player who decided on a team just because they were in the west.

Make the all star game count. Make the winner get home court advantage in the finals. It's not that hard to fix this useless game.

lol, it would be funny to watch the guys on lottery teams mess around, while guys on contenders are trying to get home court. Cousins tossing shots up from half court and getting scolded by the warriors players.

Even more reason to do it. That would be awesome

Terrible. All of it. Players shouldn't pick the sides, coaches/GMs should. Silver is a joker, make a ****ing call already you bald fence sitting ****!

A couple of key players chose to STAY in the WEST.

- Westbrook
- Chris Paul

Millsap and Teague moved to the West.

Then if you take into account 2016 as well:

- Durant stays in the West
- Harden stays in the West

But even if you IGNORE all that, the fact remains that the West is A LOT stronger, and by having the quota it's at least a small incentive for people to move East. Guys like CJ McCollum, Damien Lillard, Mike Conley, Devin Booker, etc, would be perennial All Stars in the East.

Not saying it would work in practice but that's the theory.

Aren't we already seeing it not work in practice? You're saying keeping it how it is might be effective in stopping what has already happened under the exact system.

If anything is going to send those players east, it will be an easier road to the playoffs, not the all star game.

That's an easy fix. Bench them. Guaranteed people would want to watch finally. Ad revenue alone could make it a top earning slot.

hayward still makes the all star team with this scenario no doubt. now just gotta hope the captains pick him last, with his tail between his legs and a wet willy in his ear.

NONE of those players chose their teams because they were in the west. They chose teams by other criteria that happen to be in the west.

The NBA has gone out of their way to make changes in the CBA to encourage players to re-sign with their original teams instead of seeking greener grass. One of the biggest reasons Haywood left for the east is because of a cake walk to the all-star game. So now you think the NBA is going to purposely go out of their way to be counterproductive to everything they've tried to change in the last 2 CBAs?

I'm sorry, but the imbalance in west/east has nothing to do with players wanting to be in the west, and the NBA isn't trying to even things out. They will even out on their own eventually and in the meantime, the NBA is going to continue trying to discourage players from leaving smaller/less desirable markets for greener grass, and certainly won't be working against themselves in that regard by trying to even out the east with the west.

While I agree that this does not address the problems, I do think the draft will be pretty cool and potentially political/ controversial.

If you make the AS team and get picked 24th, that has to sting a little, no?

If LeBron is drafting, when does he take Kyrie? Before or after IT?

If KD is drafting, how does he not draft his teammates first? What if he picks someone else?

The players who get slighted and drafted last, do they carry that grudge forward into the second half?

Could be some drama, both real and media/fan fabricated.

Dame probably wouldn't even be a notable snub this year (if everyone stays at the same level).

Gobert
Durant
Curry
Leonard
Westbrook
Davis
Harden
Butler
CP3
Towns
George
Cousins
Draymond
Melo
Thompson
Pachulia
Griffin
Marc Gasol
Jokic
Lillard

At least 8 of those guys will have to miss out

Pachulia, are you joking?

CP went to play with his buddy. Millsap went to the highest bidder.

One player specifically chose to go East and I think it was the deciding factor... and that was our guy. Making an All Star team is important to players... a minor change like making the AS the 24 best players could have helped us retain a player.

If they really want the East to get better make the playoffs the best 16 teams... and line them up based on record only. more East teams will be in the lotto and more talent will head that way. Less motivation to be a 40 win team.

the all star game sucks.

I can't remember the last time I watched... and I will watch summer league basketball... says something.

I don't think Steph would go this way but I hope Lebron does (assuming top 2 in votes)

Lebron
#1 - Kawhi
#2 - Gobert
#3 - Green

The All-Star game needs Gobert SO BAD! A true rim protector that will put you on yo ***!
