If we were talking about Primus, you may have a valid argument. But we're talking about VH. The bass line is amost inconsequential. Michael Anthony's technical ability with a bass is overshadowed by his vocal contributions, in terms of their overall sound. IMO, VH is a better band with Anthony regardless of how well he can or can't play the bass.
 
Beyond about 3 or 4 songs, Van Hagar was total crap.

So which 3 or 4 songs and how do they differ significantly from the "crap"?

Me thinks this is more about your childhood memories being assaulted more so than it is about actual music quality.
 
I was 15 when 5150 was released, so I feel like my musical taste was still forming, but I was a fan of VH by then, so I definitely had bias. My wife, who is 5 years my junior, became familiar with VH during the Hagar years, so she prefers that incarnation of the band.

I was in my 20's during the van Hagar horror, so nice try but no.I actually used spotify to see which I would say were ok and which were crap, and found out you are right.



It is all crap.

Scat, I know we'll never agree on this topic and that's cool, but Van Halen with Roth was an event, they were our generation's Zeppelin or Stones. When they came to town, you did what you could to get tickets. I was excited to hear them when I heard Hagar replaced Roth and when I first heard 5150, my first thought was "where'd the rock go?" They went from being Zeppelin to being Foreigner, from the Stones to Journey. They had some nice songs, but that's it...nice. The rough edges were polished and they became just another band with songs that fit nicely between the Outfield and Mister Mister on a 1986 radio playlist. That's not what I wanted from Van Halen.

While Sammy brought a new musical dimension to VH (and actually improved the overall musicianship) they definitely lost the edge that made them an *** kicking hard rock band.

Oh, and for the record, I thought Sammy's pre-VH stuff was also edgy and tough. On paper they should have remained the kind of band they were. But somehow the merger softened them both.
