What's new

Norm Chow to Hawaii.

Horrible. Quarterbacks.
Norm Chow is the one who brought Hays in. If he was so horrible then Chow should have looked elsewhere.

And it doesn't change the fact the play calling was brutal. Horrible QB or not the Utes play calling was the worst I have ever seen for a full season.

It changed sooner than that. Plenty of Ute fans have been calling for his head since about the 4th week of the season. He sucks.

We were hopeful he wasn't completely washed up. When the facts proved otherwise, our opinions of him changed.

Hopeful he wasn't washed up? Most of you were lauding this hire. I was maybe the only one who brought up the fact that he hadn't done **** in years and when he had, years before, it was with the best talent in college football. Let's exhibit some intellectual honesty here.

We were lauding the hire because he had a big name and recruiting avenues in the PAC 12 footprint.

Not many people were upset with the offense last year, so nobody really expected Chow to make major improvements on it.

Go back and look at the posts from before the season and you'll see a lot of Ute fans (myself included) saying Chow (and his offense) was one of the few question marks to be concerned about.

We didn't think he was totally washed up (which I guess you did) but most of us were cautious or even concerned.

He had a big name like Josh McDaniels had a big name.

Chow actually does have a big name in the PAC 12 footprint. His name (and relationship with high school coaches) landed Utah several commits.

What's done is done. Chow sucked calling the plays, but Utah still has the (young) guys who called the plays the last couple years (before Chow). They were just "mentored" by Chow for a year. And now they have those relationships with PAC 12 footprint high school coaches that Norm Chow set up. Hiring him for one year (on UCLA's dime) was a good thing. Him staying longer would have been a bad thing.

And do you really think the footprint Chow left was an impressive one? Again, some intellectual honesty here.

What do you mean?

Yes, I think Chow has good relationship with many PAC 12 footprint coaches. Yes, I think that enabled the Utes coaches to establish relationships with many high school coaches that they did not have relationships with before. Yes, I think these high school.coaches have a lot of respect for Chow (and now the rest of the Utah coaching staff).

So yes, I think Chow did a lot for Utah. If you disagree with that then you need a little intellectual honesty yourself.

A couple of thoughts in regards to some of the theories on Sitake that are being tossed out there:

-He might make the lateral move because he's from Hawaii. So What? When you factor in how long Sitake has been at BYU and Utah, he's been in this state for a long time. He chose to come here and has chosen to stay here. Bottom line, I don't think he's going to make a lateral move to a lesser conference that will most likely pay him less simply because he's homesick.

-Maybe he's being groomed for the HC job after Chow is done. Again, so what? Couldn't Sitake attract just as good, if not better job offers by remaining the DC of a Pac 12 school and having success there?

If you look at those 2 points individually, neither is that big of a deal (as you pointed out). Combined though, it's a pretty major consideration.

He is basically being offered a head coach job, in his home area (and the #1 area he recruits). That's something he has to seriously consider

I'm sure the guy has aspirations to be a head coach someday. I doubt he goes from Utah DC to head coach at a big time program. So if he is going to become a head coach, it will probably be at a mid major. He can work his way to a gig at a big time program from there. But he will have to start at a mid major.

If he's going to a mid major anyway, is there a better job than Hawaii? Especially since he's from there and that is the primary area that he recruits?

I know he isn't being offered the head coach position, but I'd be shocked if Chow stayed more than a year or 2. And Sitake would have to be promised that he was the "coach in waiting" in order to get him to even consider going with Chow.

I'm not predicting Sitake will go with Chow. I'm just saying it is a real possibility. Even though Utah can outbid Hawaii, Hawaii can still pay him enough to live the same lifestyle. And they can promise him a head coaching gig within the next few years, in the area that he recruits, where all his family lives, and is considered to be the most beautiful area in the nation, with the best weather.

Money is important, but it isn't everything. He wouldn't exactly be in the poor house in Hawaii.

As much as I want Sitake to follow Chow to Hawaii, it looks like it won't happen:

Tweets/ESPN700 (covers Ute athletics): “Defensive Coordinator Kalani Sitake tells @ESPN700 that he is NOT going to Hawaii and will remain on staff at Utah”

Great news!

Interesting how quick Ute fans soured on this guy.

I felt like his recruiting ties may help offset the fact that his best days as an OC are obviously far behind him. When he was hired, I never had an illusion that Utah's offense was going to look like 1980's BYU. In fact, I think I saw about exactly what I expected from Norm in regards to what Utah's offense would look like with him running the show. If Ute fans expected more than what they saw in 2011, their hopes were too high.

As long as Utah doesn't feel any recruiting fallout from all of this, Chow leaving probably isn't that big of a negative and so far it sounds like Utah will be just fine.

Utah averaged 33.1 points per game last year. I don't think Chow was brought in to improve the offense. I'm pretty sure it was just because he had a big name and had recruiting avenues that nobody on Utah's staff had.

Having him around for a year was definitely good for that. But his "offensive guru" days are long gone.

So I guess I could have just kept it short and said I pretty much agree with everything you said, lol.

I'm actually hoping Utah goes back to the spread.

Anyone who watched Chow at UCLA probably had mixed feelings about him coming here. You could see his best days were well behind him.

poll at BLockU who should replace CHow: https://www.blocku.com/

Mike Sanford and Aaron Roderick are the leading vote getters so far

I don't know how I feel about those two. Some of the other names in the poll intrigue me more.

Is Sanford even a candidate? I thought he left on bad terms?

I'd be fine with Roderick, or Roderick/Schramm doing the co OC thing again.

As great as it would be having Sanford back as OC, I don't see how that could possibly happen.
