Backstory could be like this;
Humphries shot the first free throw and ball some way came to him again, he didn't give it to ref and forgot to follow the procedure and ref decided to punish him.

apparently the subs were about to check in and the ref wanted him to wait to take the shot - but as the ESPN guys pointed out, isn't that what he has a whistle for?
