Now that a Conley trade is all but impossible, can we get him a pick n pop big?

This is a thread that assumes Conley won’t be traded. So let’s shift the discussion toward how we can maximize his production. I think he needs most of his minutes against the opponents’ second unit; and I think he needs a big who pick n pops.

Who is out there? What is his approximate market value? Etc.

I don't think it is completely out of the question that Mike will not be traded. One of the arguments for keeping/acquiring Mike is that his contract ends when DM and Rudy's max kick in... now that I think we could be a tax team at some point... adding a salary for next year is not out of the question. Lets assume he ain't goin nowhere doe.

Stretch bigs are tough because if we continue to play the same drop big scheme there aren't a lot of options that stretch the floor and protect the rim. Meyers Leonard can shoot but the rest of his game is meh. I don't really believe in Baynes' shooting. You might be able to steal Jamychal Green who is a 4/5 but he won't protect the rim in our scheme... so maybe we have to adjust the scheme? Gasol sounds like he headed for Spain. Ibaka is too spendy. Wood gonna get too much dough.

So you might be looking at Mike Muscala, Noah Vonleh, Chris Boucher who can maybe do some of that a little... maybe. Might be able to snake Kelly Olynyk but I don't see us giving something good enough for them to dump him.

I guess that's why they call the rim protecting stretch big a unicorn. I think you either get a PF who shoots threes at decent volume and struggle to stop the other team... or you get a good rim protector but generally not a guy that is going to threaten the other team from outside... sucks.

Baynes. Tough, good defender.
He might be the best option in part because I think he only gets a one year deal. His shot really comes and goes and he's hurt a lot.

If I was the owner I'm likely not going into the tax for him... so you'd need to move Ed/Tony or pass on re-signing JC.

Baynes looks like a classic contract year trap. He’s been a non-factor for most of his career, his ugly jumpshot is streaky and new, and he just had his career season on a mostly-bad team at age 33.

He had an excellent year with Boston the year before. And he’s way better than Ed & TB
Didn’t say he wasn’t. It just feels like some sucker is gonna give him way too much money and regretting it.

Then again, maybe this cap environment actually forces his market into something more sensible.

I don’t know if we’d go for Nerlens Noel but I think I’d rather swing to a young disruptive guy like that than go for Baynes. If his shooting isn’t real then he’s just okay. I think BAE could get either guy in this market.

If we can can Baynes for the BAE, then we absolutely should. Especially if we can also retain JC, use the MLE for help on the perimeter, and do enough gymnastics to stay under the tax. It’d be hard to argue with that offseason.

I agree. I just wonder if long term guys like Thad Young become the backup centers that are most effective at least for teams that go deep into the post season. Baynes at the BAE is just dandy and he’s useful... I just don’t think I’m rolling out the MLE for a pure center like Favs. Change the god damned defense when the best rim protector in the league is out maybe. Get some solid perimeter guys that can mix in with Rudy is the most important area of improvement if the team is going to increase its ceiling.

He had some old twitter stuff going on about how good he is. Also he probably loves Rudy because he’s ****ing good at basketball.

If the Lakers improve or run it back with a similar philosophy on size, then I want both Baynes-like and Young-like options.
