Why is this news? Let's get this economy back on track!
Because while the economy is the main issue it is not the only issue. Immigration, budget, gay marriage, defense spending, health care...will all be talked about to some extent.

While I agree with you, I still feel like all of this is a side show. I don't put gay marriage on the same level of importance as health care, defense spending, and the budget (I'm assuming you're talking about the deficit).
Budget can be used for both. Or about the fact that congress can't pass a budget but that gets more into the BS that is Capitol Hill.
To you and I am sure many others. But I know people who think repealing Obama Care or approving Gay Marriage are the number one issues. If the candidate only ever talked about 1 issue (take economy in this example) I do not see them winning the election. It can certainly be their main issue but not the only one.
As for the sideshow comment. Well this whole entire thing is a sideshow. I seriously doubt Obama or Romey do/try even 1/3 of what they say they will.

Gay Marriage not be the most important issues, but it is by far the easiest issue to resolve.
We can make this a threesome Dala. No reason to throw a jealousy fit. All you have to do is ask.
Guy cannot win. There are several interesting articles written in response to Dick Lugar losing his re-election bid. They talk about how the art of compromise is dying and how it is all about ideology.
