What's new

Game Thread Oct 02, 2022 04:00PM MT: Jazz at Raptors (Preseason)

Added to Calendar: 10-02-22

This team sucks and I really dont think there will be much "joy" in watching them other than knowing every loss is a win. The most we can hope for is some progression month to month to where hopefully the team learns to pass better and play as a team, because no one on this roster can create for themselves or others so the only hope for a competent offense is quick/crisp ball movement. I would love to have seen this roster under Snyder.

A few takeaways:
** Beasley is a spot-up shooter. Full stop. He needs to be squared up with his feet set and needs open looks.
** Olynyk is a backup. He's not a starter. I don't think the Jazz actually have a starter at the 5.
** There's no one on this team setting screens to shake guys loose like Rudy did. It might be worth playing Dok just to set screens and rebound.
** Conley is still a good floor leader who sees the floor and moves the ball with pace, but he doesn't have much to work with aside from Markkanen.
** Markkanen is about the only guy the Jazz can go to in the half court. He'll probably be our leading scorer.
** I don't think Sexton is actually a point guard. Today he looked better playing off the ball.

I thought NAW actually looked really good on defense.

Him and Butler have the same kind of record scratch moments, probably from some form of performance anxiety/nerves.

Until Sexton emerges as a legitimate scorer/creator and not a guy who was just feasting on a ****** *** team, the Jazz have no one who can create for themselves or others at any kind of decent level.
I'm keeping an open mind on Sexton but he's not going to be developing as a playmaker next to JC who is just out there looking for his own shot. It got real sloppy in the 2nd half with guys not moving the ball especially some of the veteran players.

I don't think Olynyk added anything to today's starting lineup either. Conley can still play. Beasley can shoot but he needs to be fed. I liked what I saw of Markannen in the first half. He has some potential to rebound and bring the ball up the floor. I like Vandy but he's so limited offensively. Gay is washed. JC is still JC and looking for his own shot every time down the floor which is not a great fit on this current team. NAW has some untapped potential and would like to see more of him playing alongside Sexton or Conley. I thought Kessler was fine in his first preseason game.

Pretty good takeaways, but I do think KO looked way better than his box score.

Problem is we have these guys like Conley/Markkanen/KO/Beasely who are probably pretty solid NBA starters, but they need to be next to shot creators or be a part of a well oiled offensive system by an experienced coach.

I'm not trying to be negative on Sexton, just saying until he proves it, he isnt it.

I really liked what I saw out of KO tonight. He looked dangerous, there just isnt the chemistry there with his teammates that he needs to excel as the offensive fulcrum point.
