Game Thread Oct 31, 2024 07:00PM MT: San Antonio Spurs @ Utah Jazz

My current theory on Keyonte is that he is just too easy to game plan for. He doesn't have enough counters when teams take away what he wants to do and gets frustrated and then he starts shooting poorly. He was great in summer league, looked extremely promising in pre-season, and had stretches last year where he looks like the next great Jazz player. Then he gets in to real games this year and has been awful. I think he needs the players around him to be great to take pressure off of him. With Lauri out and everyone else playing bad, he can't take over a game.
I'm not sure about that. He seems to get to spots where he can definitely make the shots he is given. I agree about frustration showing in his game, as especially when we fall behind by a lot he starts making more mental errors and probably his shooting percentages dip as well.

Last game he started off terrific with few assists in the first few minutes and he made a contested 20 ft pull up. I dont think Spurs really did anything to counter him at any point, but despite hitting that tough first shot and having a good start he still missed all his 3 point attempts including one which was essentially a practice shot with absolutely no one coming for him:
1. Uncontested pull up off a screen, true, hard back iron
2. Wide open transition jumper, true, hard back iron
3. Wide open spot up corner 3, true, hard front iron
4. Slightly contested step back, (maybe) true, grazed front iron (almost air ball)

He was actually playing just fine in the first half. He was like 0-5 from 3, but you’ve just got to have some faith those good looks will eventually go in. He was good with the exception of making good looks.

But in the third quarter that’s when things went off the rails. I think he had 3-4 turnovers in the first five minutes and they were bad. Terrible mental mistakes. I wouldn’t call them “unforced”. But an NBA guard should really be able to handle some basic ball pressure.

Yeah he definitely can get to really bad mindspaces (I also facepalmed hard that stretch).. and part of that is fine as he is obviously competitive and gets frustrated when the team falls badly behind. The he starts forcing the issue etc, and at some point when it gets out of hand he starts playing like he dgaf.

If I were to play body language doctor, I'm worried he will fall into the same slump as Kessler last year. Chances are he had really high expectations of himself this year and he's a little shell shocked with how poorly it's started. It compounds the issue. A few things go wrong and then everything gets worse.

I wouldnt maybe go that far, as last year already he seemed to be a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve... for good and for bad.

^Agreed. The body language and lack of hustle is a really bad entitled look for a 21 yo kid who hasn't proven anything yet at the NBA level. I tuned in for the 3rd quarter and immediately turned the game off after that play. It's pretty obvious the team has already given up 5 games into the season. It's ok to lose but at least show some heart and hustle out there on the court. Hardy might not have talent to compete but he can at least enforce them to play hard. They've played 5 games and only tried to somewhat compete in 2 of them.

Keynote is such garbage. Lose the ball, walk back. If it was 20 points difference in 4th, then ok. Unforgivable attitude. Locker room needs someone that holds these kids accountable.

Ya that play stood out to me last night.

Good news is that I saw that type of play by Key quite often last year. This year he has mostly given consistently great effort imo. Some moments of laziness and pouting but very few. Seemed like it happened every game last year.

Halloween night activities consumed me… just watched the game. We are fine. Executing a great tank. Flip looks awesome. Key is struggling but I really just think he’s not a lead guard. It’s fine to put all this on his plate but eventually I think his offense improves when you simplify and treat him more as an off guard.

I see why Cody was passing up all those threes in the preseason. He will be fine I think but the shot has to fall.

Walker looks good still. Collin is our best guy at creating good offensive actions.

The tank is so strong and we need to trust the filter.

I have been a Jazz fan since their move to Utah in 79. We started out as an absolutely horrible team but I fanned through that era into the glory years. I think trading away both Mitchell and Gobert was a gutsy move by the FO. I can see why that was done. Unfortunately we picked up quite a few descent players as well as draft picks in the exchange. Unfortunately the quality of those players derailed the plans that year.
Thats the point where I think things became a little weird. The FO started trading descent players a getting little or nothing in return. Trading players simply to get rid of talent is how they have worked ever since. Many on here seam to revel in how bad this team is. I lament how far we have fallen. I see a team that back when Sloan coached would fight every game, wouldn't quit, if they didn't beat you, you knew you had been in a fight.
This team folds at the first signs of trouble. I think they are unwatchable, they may not be any good but in my opinion they should attempt to play as hard and as well as they can every minute on the floor. I can stand to watch a poor jazz team as long as the effort is there. This Jazz team has shown little of that effort. I'm old and I don't think I have enough of my life left to sit through a 5 or 10 year rebuild. Unfortunately, it appears to me that that is where we are headed.
GET OFF OF MY LAWN!!!!!!!
