Offensive identity

During the broadcast last night they were talking about the Jazz's ongoing search for an offensive identity with Dennis Lindsay. It was making me cry because it sounded like they were already conceding this season as a lost cause. I don't see it that way with Hayward having the ball in his hands the majority of the game. Once Burke comes back we'll have three talented perimeter players with him, Hayward and Burks - and a pair of big guys capable of finishing plays around the basket.

I think back to the Gonzaga teams from 5 or 6 years ago when they had a trio of talented guards and used some weave action at the top of the key to get the ball moving and their playmakers the rock on the move. There's no reason the Jazz can't be effective doing that. It's simple basketball but it works. I hope Corbin doesn't plan on spreading the court and dumping the ball into Favors or Kanter on the block every possession and letting them tryout their back-to-the-basket moves they've been working on but are nowhere close to polished.

Favors and Kanter are two of the most intriguing big men in the league but they obviously have tons of room to improve, but more to the point they still haven't displayed consistency.

I hope the Jazz feature the guards (with RJ and Rush as well) on offense this year.

What does everyone else want our offensive identity to be?

If you are looking at it as this season being succesful only if the jazz make the playoffs and go deep than yes this season is a lost cause.

Fortunately that is not what this season is about. It is about giving Kanter, Favors, Hayward, Burks, Burke, Evans, Rush (and to a lesser extent Gobert) and even Corbin, yes Corbin, a chance to show us what they can do. To take that knowledge into the draft and free agency with alot of room to move and set this team up for the next decade. That is how this year will be determined to be succesful or not. On how well they grow, evaluate and respond accordingly.

I was saying a lost cause as in it sounded as if they've already waved the white flag. I enjoy watching the team I root for COMPETE. I understand how young and inexperienced in respective roles the Jazz are and what may come with that, but they should still compete and they are talented enough to win games.

But I was hoping to get some feedback about what everyone hopes our offensive identity is this year. I figured the attention whore PKM would post something meaningless to pile onto his postcount but I've enjoyed your posts and would like to hear who you and everyone else hope is featured/what type of sets are run/etc.

I am glad that is what was said. This season should be a "lost cause" in terms of going after wins and trying to make the playoffs. As said above, it is about setting the jazz up for 10 years. Sounds like Lindsey is on board with this.

My goal for this season is simple: to have each of the 5 youngsters average 36 minutes. End of story. See what they can do and what they can learn.

I absolutely agree that I want to see the Jazz fight their butts off every game. If they do that I will be good with however this season ends up record wise. Obviously some scenarios are better than others but they are all good.

As for offensive identity I think it will be around Hayward and Kanter with Favors being a garbage man offensively. I do not expect to many 3s until Rush is back in full swing. I'd say alot of transition baskets and midrange Js.

No offensive identity = bad coach. Obviously, Ty wishes he had Jefferson to dump it down to the post and create something. The players look like they have no idea what they want to do on offense and putting so much pressure on Hayward to create may eventually hurt his overall game.

* and try their butts off.

Fair and good question. Unfortunately, I do not have the knowledge to have any great ideas. I do know one thing: I hope and pray that Alfense-StocktontoMalone is not the plan. Lets modernize, lets innovate and use our talent in the best way possible.

Not me. I want 30-32 mins each. Deron and AK never recovered from the seasons that they played over 36 mins. They were constantly injured after those seasons.

Stan Van Gundy and Colin Cowherd were talking about how wussy players today have become and how coaches are holding their minutes low. Players in the Bill and Wilt era were playing 40+ a night and didn't deal with a lot of injury. Didn't Karl and John play 38-40? I'll have to look.

One thing to keep an eye on this year is if they are or aren't done trading for picks in the 14 draft. We upped Favors to a sizable extension, and he showed some flashes, and the talk is the jazz are about to do the same with Hayward. Will we have room for Burks and Kanter, and two 14 draft prospects with one of those possibly being a franchise player. Just something to consider. OKC had to make a hard decision, and so will we.

I'm starting to think that Burks won't be around thru next year. Kanter gets signed. The draft picks will be on rookie contracts.
