What's new

***Official new head coach search thread*** (merged)

I like what Mike Longabardi brings to the table - some of the things that he had to say about working with a young team like the Suns. . .

"It's definitely an adjustment. With a young team like the Suns, you have to take baby steps with the goal that someday, we get to the point that an experienced team like the Celtics were at. It's a process and I know we can never get too far ahead. We have to take it step by step and can't skip a single one. In the back of my mind, I know it's a process that I'm going to be patient with."

"Teaching defensive values will be a day-to-day effort. There's no magic wand to immediately get there. That goes for offense too because both sides of the court are connected. If you don't take a good shot on offense, it's going to hurt you on defense. Likewise, if you don't play good defense, you're going to get a worse shot on offense. We're going to have to get consistent effort. We know that there are going to be some nights that we might lose because we're overmatched with talent. But the important thing is to give effort and see progress."

"Well, you can't play fast all the time. You want to play fast to score easy points but you can't play reckless. You have to play to your strengths. Talent determines how a team should play. Taking bad shots makes it harder on defense (and vice versa). It's important to remember that in order to score, you have to get the ball, which you do by playing defense. When it comes down to it, it's tough to win playing at a high pace all the time. The game becomes a chess match in the playoffs, where execution is vital. The team that gets the most easy shots is the one that wins. So your job on defense is to make it hard for the other team to score."

I like the guy. A lot. Think he'll make a heck of a head coach when he gets the opportunity. Wouldn't feel bad at all if it was with the Jazz.

Marc Stein: More than one coaching insider has insisted Utah is on short list of teams that will give legit consideration to Euro legend Ettore Messina Twitter @ESPNSteinLine

Marc Stein: Utah's Dennis Lindsey and top front-office aide Justin Zanik are both known to be big fans of Messina. And word in Europe all season has been that Messina, once he's done with CSKA Moscow's current campaign, wants to make the jump to the NBA. Twitter @ESPNSteinLine

Marc Stein: Detractors say Messina drives players too hard to succeed in NBA. Fans insist he can adapt after that season he spent as a Lakers assistant. Twitter @ESPNSteinLine

Less than a year after losing top assistant coach Mike Budenholzer to the Atlanta Hawks, the Spurs may be in danger of losing his successor to the Utah Jazz. According to a well-connected NBA source familiar with the Jazz? search for a successor to head coach Ty Corbin, Spurs assistant Jim Boylen is at the top of Utah general manager Dennis Lindsey?s list of potential replacements. Lindsey announced on Monday that the club will not offer a new contract to Corbin, whose contract soon will expire. San Antonio Express-News

Marc Stein: VERY true DLindsey & JBoylen share long-term mutual admiration. Remains to be seen, tho, whether Jazz can hire guy who struggled at UofUtah. Twitter @ESPNSteinLine

Jody Genessy: Intriguing Jazz head coach replacements: Mike Longabardi, Alex Jensen, Brad Jones, Fred Hoiberg, Ettore Messina, Andy Greer, among others. Twitter @DJJazzyJody

So does he have assistant coaches from over there that he likes to coach with that he could bring over? Any of these guys on CSKA?

Because that would have to be a huge plus in his favor if he could staff a whole bench that he is familiar with, if they are also capable of course. And maybe combine that with a guy or two that is more familiar with the Jazz/NBA. Or maybe he already has a bunch of guys in the NBA that he knows. I don't know, just thinking.

Wow, I mean big WOW!

Even though he sucked with CSKA lately except the Russian league, Messina is indeed a top notch coach, he deservedly has a legendary career. But the actual wowing thing for me is that the Jazz being willing for that kind of experiment/experience. I now truly believe that this is a different organization with DL, the guy is a true enterprising GM and will make this team very exciting for many years.

I'd be somewhat concerned if Messina was coming for the first time to the NBA but now he has experience with Lakers, I'm all for this experiment.. Make it real DL!!!
