What's new

***Official new head coach search thread*** (merged)

Randy Rigby said the Jazz will each out to iconic players. Now that there are rumors about Stockton can we expect rumors regarding Karl Malone soon?

After the Euroleague Finals hopefully we'll have some good news???

Can one of you Euro guys confirm the date?

Euroleague Finals will be played on 16&18 May. Russian league also ends for CSKA if they lose to Kuban on 22nd May. So that's the earliest possible date that Messina can be completely free.

..... so that's just after the Draft Lottery???

How perfectly convenient. I bet Messina's last words to Lindsey was "Let's wait to see what pick you guys got, then we'll talk".

Chances are great that a similar conversation have indeed happened, if they contacted at all, which I believe they did. (at least a few phone calls or some preliminary contacts through agents). There is just no reason to tell to the public any of those. On the contrary there are strong reasons not to, Messina's ongoing work and playing the cards calm and quietly being first.

On a side not, if and hopefully when we get a top 3 pick in the lottery, we will have a much stronger hand and really become the center of interest of the head coaching candidates.

Yah, my take is Messina is too "nice" to Lindsey to straight out tell him this, but would be to say something like "I'm really interested, but let me finish up the Euroleague & Russian League obligations before talking further". Lindsey nods in agreement - knowing Messina really just wants to see what pick we get before taking Utah seriously.

This is Jazz related because I want Monroe and because SVG was a coach who theoretically could have come to the jazz.

What if Stockton wants this job? Are the Jazz going to say no to him, and if he sucks, will they ever fire John Stockton? Will they pull the statue down if he is as bad as Corbin?

The Utah Jazz, as part of a broad coaching search expected to feature some 20 candidates, plan to reach out to Jazz legend John Stockton to gauge whether he has any interest in the position, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. ESPN.com

Sources told ESPN.com that Jazz officials intend to at least pose the question to the Hall of Fame guard about his willingness to move into coaching, while mindful of Stockton's lack of previous coaching experience and the fact that he has long loathed the sort of spotlight associated with the job.

Sources say the Jazz are likely to sit down with a handful of potential candidates this week at the league's annual pre-draft camp in Chicago as part of an introductory round of interviews. In April, Jazz team president Randy Rigby told 1280 AM in Utah that the team's "exhaustive" search to find a successor to Corbin would eventually feature more than 20 candidates. ESPN.com

Perhaps there is some interest from Stockton but he doesn't want to jump right into a HC position. Maybe an assistant under Messina?

Have:
Messina - HC
Messina's #1 guy - lead assistant
Stockton - assistant coach
Jensen - assistant coach

If Stockton wasn't an asset, you wouldn't have to fire him. He would quit. He isn't going to do anything half-assed.

We just went through a two and a half page tangent about editing the word "spork." I vote we let this slide. . .
There is no way that DL has not already talked to Messina, just no way. Messina has already quit his job for next year. Also, I don't think somebody like Messina cares if we have the number 3 pick or number 5. Likely any of those players aren't going to be world beaters for a couple of years at least. I would suspect he would be more interested in the budget to bring "his type" of players in to fill roles. Jazz have cap room and young tradable assets, Lakers do not. He can mold the Jazz roster, Lakers kind of have to roll with what they have. I really suspect that Messina has no interest whatsoever in Tanking, which is probably why we left Ty on board for one more year and let Horney go. I have to believe that the Messina thing wasn't just something cooked up a few weeks ago, and has probably been the plan for almost as long as DL has been here. Of course that would look kind of ugly in certain circles, which is why we have been thrown the "Boylen" fiction, which doesn't really hurt Boylen at all. Without the Jazz, Boylen would have been shut out of any coaching vacancy talks, now at least he is "out there." It's going to be Messina, folks. . .

Many people on JazzFanz last year saw how great a fit Hornacek would have been as the HC to take over Ty. So why did someone with a great basketball mind and as calculating as Dennis Lindsey is, have missed out on Hornacek's talent?

Do you know what I think? I think it's because Lindsey (coming from the Spurs background) already had an eye on Messina, and somehow had his heart set on Messina the moment he became the Jazz GM.

It didn't surprise me that DL went on his "European Scouting Trip" almost the day after Ty was fired. It won't surprise me in the least when Messina is hired neither. Let's wait and see - but if my hunch is right - DL will announce Messia as our HC over the coming months or not weeks.

This is what I have hoped for/thought for a long time, but I dare not get too excited. For all we know, it could be purely coincidental.
However, I don't think Hornacek would have ever been offered the job. He was not experienced enough. Jazz want/need someone with a track record in order to establish immediate credibility with a young roster. Otherwise, at the first sign of trouble, the players lose confidence in the HC, and think it's HIS inexperience rather than their own play that is to blame. If you have a coach who has been successful, you don't have that problem.

The European trip was likely already scheduled before Corbin was let go. International scouting is becoming increasingly more important under Lindsey (Gobert, Neto, etc.). Last draft I remember him saying the international scout was given a full day to discuss prospects vs. just the few hours that he used to have. Just like the Jazz would be using the NCAA tournament to evaluate US talent, they'd use the Euroleague playoffs to look at international talent. That said, I'm sure they did reach out to Messina or his agent. At a minimum to gauge his interest or say "let's talk after you've officially finished up with CSKA."

I also think Stockton would not be asked to be the HC. I'll bet the Jazz would ask him to come in as an assistant, specifically to work full-time with Burke, Neto and Garrett, or whoever the 3rd PG is. Maybe this is a good sign "The Messina" is descending upon us. He'll need help filling out his coaching staff. My guess is that Messina would likely bring over a maximum of one assistant and then would want the remaining coaches to be those with NBA experience. Who better to fill one of the roles than Stockton?
