Yeah, Cartwright and Rambis were real stars in this league.
 
I'd take Stockton and Phil Johnson and Jensen any day of the week.

Not my top choice, but I wouldn't complain.

Does this mean my Messina wet dream is over? Why are they interviewing him if Messina is a lock?

Calipari apparently asked by a Cleveland reporter if he'd be interested in coaching LeBron. Cal said he'd jump at the chance.

LeBron opts out; he and Cal go to Cavs. Git 'er done!
 
Stockton is not a gamble.

Watching KD and Westbrook chuck up early in the shotclock 3's from 30 feet the other night you wonder "what are they thinking". I don't remember ever watching stockton and thinking to myself "that was a poor decision". SRS Stockton was the goat of reading the floor. Does anybody think that the perspective of the sideline would make that harder for him?

To the "the game has changed" crowd. Yes the game has changed but it has also very much remained the same. Have you not been watching the Spurs these last few years?

There is no way that DL has not already talked to Messina, just no way. Messina has already quit his job for next year. Also, I don't think somebody like Messina cares if we have the number 3 pick or number 5. Likely any of those players aren't going to be world beaters for a couple of years at least. I would suspect he would be more interested in the budget to bring "his type" of players in to fill roles. Jazz have cap room and young tradable assets, Lakers do not. He can mold the Jazz roster, Lakers kind of have to roll with what they have. I really suspect that Messina has no interest whatsoever in Tanking, which is probably why we left Ty on board for one more year and let Horney go. I have to believe that the Messina thing wasn't just something cooked up a few weeks ago, and has probably been the plan for almost as long as DL has been here. Of course that would look kind of ugly in certain circles, which is why we have been thrown the "Boylen" fiction, which doesn't really hurt Boylen at all. Without the Jazz, Boylen would have been shut out of any coaching vacancy talks, now at least he is "out there." It's going to be Messina, folks. . .

I agree - but only to the extent that he has a decent crew of SOLID nba assistants helping him run drills and stuff in practice.


My only concern with stockton is whether he is vocal enough or savvy enough (Kidd is both and he seems to be doing a good job in NY).

It's up to Jerry if he wants to try coaching again.

Randy will neither confirm nor deny Adrien Griffith or John Stockton rumors.

Jazz are in the phase of asking permissions and interviewing candidates.

Won't confirm or deny 20 candidates.

Jazz won't give coach the role of president, like SVG. They are telling candidates that he must fit within existing Jazz organization.

Jazz will be respectful of coaches style, but his style needs to fit with the jazz goals and the direction the league is going.

The Spurs are on the cutting edge of analytics. They are leading the change, my friend. They are not managing/ coaching by the old rules of instinct/ gut/ experience. They are playing the numbers in personnel, strategy and tactics.

First, any choice is a gamble. If you think Stockton is a "sure thing" you are certainly overconfident in your ability to predict the future.

Second, read the last few chapters of Stockton's book and see if you change your opinion. He admits to his inability to lead the young players on the team as it fragmented in his last few years. It was a very honest, authentic and grounded self-reflection which rang true to me. He did a lot of reflecting on the "good old days" of the NBA. Stockton would be miserable not being able to get out of the spotlight. He is very introverted and would not be sustainably fulfilled as an NBA coach. And he knows it, so I doubt very much if he would consider an NBA HC job. I see him as an assistant or as a college HC (If Gonzaga's coach were younger, he could be stepping in).
