Punch Bowl Re-Filler
EVERY player battles injuries. First full year? C'mon, the guy is 23 and has been playing professionally for years. This isn't some wide-eyed kid out of high school (the excuse we use for Exum). Rudy rebounded well in March, I'll give you that. But he didn't have a stellar month overall: his FG% was .475 (really bad for a player who only takes shots around the rim); FT% an embarrassing 51%. Blocks a ho-hum 1.6/per (nothing special). Points per was an underwhelming 6.7.By what standards? It would have been hard for any player to live up to the hype that Gobert received during the final stretch of last year and through the summer. He's been battling injuries and this is his first full year as a starter. He's 23 and averaging 9 PPG, 11 RPG, and 2 BPG. You don't win Defensive Player of the Month by being a scrub.
When Utah needs to make stops down the stretch to win games, where's Rudy? On the bench because he's one of the worst in the league with FT's. This isn't football; you can only have limited sub outs for defensive/offensive purposes. Unless Rudy becomes a better two-way player, it's a legitimate argument that Utah COULD be better off with a different starting lineup. Give me a couple of 16/12 players who are both threats to shoot outside as well as run the P&R. That MAY be better than a player who you only have to worry about from 5ft in (and can foul if needed to just give up 1 pt on average per possession).
IMO, Rudy has been one of the most disappointing parts of the Jazz season, simply because we THOUGHT he'd make some improvement. And he hasn't. Where are those who proclaim the 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd (depending on who they are arguing for) year is when players make the biggest leap. Can't be a sophomore slump; this is Rudy's 3rd year. Oh wait, rookie season doesn't really count because he's from France or played under Corbin or was worked too hard by his national team.
