Official skills challenge, 3pt shootout and slam dunk contest

Who would be the best four dunk participants we could get in the league? Or eight? I'd prefer eight guys who go head-to-head in rounds...down to 4, and then the final 2. Some big names with some purely explosive guys. A nice mix. You could take the four previous winners along with four new guys even...my top six off the top of my head would be...

Lavine, Lebron, Oladipo, Gerald Green, Evans...

I like that y have gerald green.
I would say Wiggins has to be in it.

Blake griffin would be one of the favorites

Lol Giannis sucks at dunking in a contest.

Yep. This is one of the many reasons that I think they should just trade him to the Jazz for Kanter and Burke. Addition by subtraction. (If only the Jazz had just drafted him. . . Heavy, sad sigh.)

Korver also shoots shots that are generally less difficult. A lot of catch and shoot just outside the arc. Korver is also a great shooter but I don't think I've ever seen anyone shoot like Curry. Behind the back cross over, step back, great defender in his face, from uber deep it doesn't matter he's still deadly efficient.

still shooting 12% less than korver. that's significant. curry is an mvp candidate, but saying curry is the greatest shooter is a stretch when there is a guy who shoots over 50% behind the arc.

A few thoughts from the show tonight.... I had to DVR, just watched it.

1. From reading some of the comments in the beginning of this thread, it would seem like none of you realized they were using extra money balls in the three point contest.. That's why the scores were so high.

2. The skill challenge is embarrassing to watch. What the hell is that thing? Please get rid of it.

3. The shooting stars challenge is awful too. Not quite as bad as the skills challenge, but still pretty bad.

4. The Allstars weekend in general just seems to get worse. They keep making bad tweaks to it.

....funny how I can agree with the Hack on a lot of this stuff, but adamantly disagree with him that Curry is the best shooter in NBA history or even in the league right now! I will agree with you that the All Star weekend and game continues to deteriorate and has become as unwatchable as the NBA itself! It's basically a "Hip Hop" convention that features poor entertainment and very bad basketball.

Curry and Korver aren't really comparable. They are different kinds of shooters.

I don't think it's a stretch at all to say Curry is the best off-the-dribble 3pt shooter of all time and possibly best overall shooter ever (since he can shoot from any spot on/off ball).

Korver might be the best shooter 3pt shooter coming off screens of all time, but I wouldn't call him the best overall 3pt shooter of all time since he has no off-the-dribble game.

I thought All Star weekend was good overall. The 3-pt. shootout had some good performances--Irving, Matthews, Curry. The dunk contest was a blow-out, but Lavine brought the goods. There were some good moments in the All Star game. I'm not sure how much more people can expect.

I will admit that Curry puts pressure on a defense in a very different way from Korver, Mathews, or even Thompson, because he always has the ball and plays the PG position. However, people are not realizing how incredible 52% from 3 on nearly 6 3 pts/game.

How is one defining "shooter" is another question. Could Curry beat Korver at horse? Is this the question? Curry has never lead the league in 3 pt. %.
I judge shooters on 3 pt.% mainly, I'm not interested in a player's 7 ft floater %. I understand that 2 pt. shots are important as well.

Compare these shooting %:
Korver: https://stats.nba.com/player/#!/2594/tracking/shots/
Curry: https://stats.nba.com/player/#!/201939/tracking/shots/

With catch and shoot, Korver destroys Curry, period. In other aspects, Curry is a tad bit better on some two point %.

If Curry took the same shots as Korver, I think he could at least be close to replicating that percentage.

But there's no way Korver could take and make the 3 point shots that Curry does. I'm talking crossing people over, stopping on a dime, and still nailing it from 3 feet behind the line with a hand in your face.

I don't have any problem with the hip hop aspect. I like hip hop. I still like the three point contest and the dunk contest. Some small things with the dunk contest I don't like.

I don't like the skills challenge at all. There is nothing that is entertaining about it.

First we are talking about difficult shots from well behind the line.

Second since stats are the end all be all for you let's look at their careers instead of half a season.

In 5 of his previous 11 seasons Korver shot under 40% from 3. Korver has never had a full season where he averaged over 3 makes per game. He has had 8 seasons where he averaged less than 2.

In all of his previous 5 seasons Curry has shot over 40% from 3. Curry has had 2 seasons where he averaged over 3 makes per game. He has had 0 seasons in which he averaged less than 2.

This season is not yet over we shall see how it shakes out. Whatever happens I bet Korver's 3PA per game go down while Curry keeps averaging 7+.

The skills challenge is just lame. I'd much rather watch a game of horse or something.

It reminds me of barrel racing.(rodeo) They should keep the skills challenge but issue each player a stick horse to ride:)
