The best moves the Jazz have made in the last decade revolve around the fireworks of getting Deron and trading him. The Jazz need to show nuts like that more often (and follow through when they get young talent). I'm trying to be patient, but after two years of crickets I'm losing my mind assuming that the trend continues.

Well, before Deron, Jazz had two pretty good talents they tried to build around named Stockton and Malone. You may have heard of them. Perhaps it was a mistake not to trade them before they started to decline. But it would have been a PR nightmare to do so. Did Boston trade Bird, did LA trade Magic? Nope, and those storied franchises went into steep decline right after letting their stars retire.

But the Jazz quickly rebuilt. They went after a couple of restricted FA's whose offers were matched. Then they went after Boozer and Okur, huge risks because KOC overpaid to get them to sign with the Jazz. KOC traded up to get Deron. The team went to the WC finals and were so close to being legit contenders: had Boozer just played a little defense, had AK not gone all EMO.

It takes a while to rebuild, to get rid of contracts. The Sloan/Deron fiasco caught everyone off guard. The team was trying to keep Deron and rebuild around him, evidenced by the trade for a top big in AL. That was a risk. And he and Deron never meshed well. Then Deron sours on Sloan, stops running his plays and Jerry quits. KOC and Greg have a powwow and decide Deron is a BIG part of the problem and very likely will not re-sign with the Jazz. Should KOC have gone the Denver route, trading for more established players? Debatable. KOC swung for the fences, banking on Favors becoming an all-star caliber big and the future picks turning into quality players as well.

Houston paying Harden a ton of money is like the chance we took throwing MAX money at AK. Is Harden a superstar? Can he carry the team like a Kobe or LeBron? Guess only time will tell. And what if they can get Howard? Will the big three of Harden, Howard, Lin be enough? There are only two teams that have succeeded with the model of acquiring a big 3 and roster fillers: Boston and Miami. In Boston's case, they were lucky to have had a young Rondo. In Miami's case, LeBron and Wade are truly transcendent talents.

SA is an outlier. They tanked into Duncan. But they have, IMO, the best coach in Popovich (I'd rank him ahead of even Jackson, were Phil still coaching). And their talent evaluation has been brilliant. OK, KOC is not on that level. But no one else is, either.

Jazz are rebuilding a 2nd time. But we're still competitive. That's a tremendous feat. Sure I'd like Utah to contend for a championship THIS season. I want that every year. But I also look at what the Jazz are trying to do with cap space. They'll be in a tremendous place this summer with Jefferson and Millsap off the roster. They should still be in good shape in 2 years when Marvin comes off the books...just in time to re-sign Favors and Hayward. Tell you what, I like our position a lot better than Brooklyn's. They've failed with their Big-3 strategy...and they know it.

OK, so let's go the OKC route. Dump all our players so we finish in the high lottery 3 straight years. Perhaps we'll get lucky enough that in one of those years a Durant comes our way.

All I'm saying is that standing pat and not getting anything for expiring assets is silly. Even if Bledsoe is unattainable, one of Al or Paul needs to go. Why wait?

Because the right deal isn't on the table. Seriously, there is value with Al and Paul coming off the books this offseason. It isn't silly, what would be silly is taking on a bad contract or player that doesn't factor into the future. OR giving up a player that does factor into the future (like Burks) on a risk like Bledsoe.
 
I guess it's possible to sign and trade one or both of them, all I'm saying is that the cap space itself does almost nothing since there aren't a lot of guys who should get you excited this offseason.

One thing cap space can do is allow us to take on some other teams salary dumps to get under the luxury tax and receive assets/picks for doing so.

I personally do not want more picks or "assets" right now. I think what the Jazz need is a young, aggressive floor general.

Either way I will be watching the Jazz on Saturday and rooting like I always am.
 
The Best part of trade deadline day is watching all Jazz fans get all upset over no trade. So at 1:00 pm it's going to get real entertaining around here.

What ****ing scarecrow did you just bark at? Are Al, Millsap, and Mo a fraction as good as Stockton and Malone? Did Stockton and Malone ever have anyone arguably as good as them buried under them?
