What's new

Official UofU homer thread

So two games into the season, I can say without a doubt that my only 2 concerns are penalties (which are happening at a frightening rate), and the continued red zone issues.

Huntley has been better than advertised imo, and I think I like the offense but I'm still a little cautious due to the fact that we're still settling for FG's. Defensively we're sitting pretty, as usual.

San Jose State serves as a good opportunity to clean up all the ******** before we hit PAC12 play. If they can tighten things up, I think this team can actually be better than most people predicted.

I'm worried about the O-Line.
They're not making holes for running plays.
Part of the problem is Huntley not being in sync with the RBs, but there's also nowhere for them to go.

Secondary is really good right now. Defense as a whole is really good right now.

The only thing not clicking is the O-Line.

I was happy with pass protection vs BYU. Certainly, we didn't have success running with the RB's but part of me wonders if the game plan was just more focused on running the ball with Huntley. Either way, it needs to get fixed because Huntley's usage in the run game is way too high. I think the reason I'm not too concerned about it yet is the fact that Utah's always had the guys up front to run the ball.

I really do think Utah conceded to the strength of BYU's front 7 and was actually hoping for 8 men in the box in hopes that they could get Huntley out on the edge. I understand the logic but they're gonna get Huntley killed.

Saturday night I expect them to look entirely different in the run game.

I really like Huntley but he sure does get hit a lot

Man Utah is so frustrating. They're good enough to get you excited and undisciplined enough to make a huge mistake that kills momentum just as they're about to absolutely blow their opponent off the field. It's gone exactly that way in each of their 2 and a half games so far.

I realize I'm bitching about games vs N. Dakota, a BYU team that's having a rough season and San Jose State, but these are the sort of things that just don't start clicking for a team once they start playing tougher opponents.

Ok, now I'll say something nice: Aside from that boneheaded pick right before halftime, Tyler Huntley looks more and more electric. I seriously don't think Utah's had a more exciting QB since Scott Mitchell. I loved Alex Smith, but I just see a little bit more substance with Huntley.

I agree in every respect.
But... long term view.
I think we will be fine.
I think we need to keep in mind... new offense. New quarterback who started only his 3rd game. Things can only get better, and if Huntley - a sophomore! - keeps getting better, we may be in for a very fun next few years. :)
