What's new

Ok, you are coaching the Jazz. How do you stop Parker/Gino from abusing Jefferson on PnR?

Zero truth to that statement, zero. We watch the games, we see him score, we see the box scores.

Folks like you are the ones with blinders on, the do not see the miserable defense, the poor passing, the stalled offense, the failure to ever run the floor, etc etc, that do not show up in the box score. He is a great one on one low post scorer, decent rebounder and shot blocker, but gives up too much elsewhere to be considered good. And he is a terrible liability on defense as a C, the most important position on D. Look at all the teams that play a C who cannot score but plays solid defense.

This is one hundred percent truth. How can more people not realize this?

I haven't watched enough Spurs basketball to know this, but I wonder if Parker would be bothered by some extra length. Send Hayward, Burks, and/or Carroll to guard him for a stretch? Parker is pretty unflappable, but you've got to throw wrinkles into this.

I also like the full-court press, even if it is just a soft press that takes 6 seconds off the shot clock. That may prevent the extra pass to the wide open 3-pnt shooter.

^Combine these two^

Jefferson wasn't as miserable as he could have been in game one (defensively speaking), and we still lost. He can't be the anchor.

This has been said a million times, but, yeah, I'll keep saying it. Keeping him in this role will yield predictable results.

Can he shadow the slow-footed Bonner? I'd rather him try to do that and let Favors anchor the center of the defense.

The best defense against the Spurs is a good offense. Get Duncan in foul trouble... Abuse Blair and Bonner.... Attack TP (he can't guard a chair)... Take advantage of Manu's aggressiveness....

The worst defense against the Spurs is a stalled offense of dumping into Jefferson, have him dribble out the shot clock, and everyone stand around....

One other thing, I wouldn't mind seeing Hayward defend TP at times. He can play off of him in order to prevent the drive and his length might give him trouble... Much like how Pippen could give Stockton trouble.

How about returning the favor as a Nash recruiting tool? Parker deserves it for being a floppy bitch.

Seeing as Bonner takes Favors and Millsap off the dribble with his pump fakes on their closeouts, yes, he probably could.

It would be an interesting try though. Do they just put Big Al in a pick n pop' with Bonner when that happens though?

Totally agree.

I would actually try to get 3's for Harris/Hayward and shoot a lot of 3's, see what happens.

Can't be worse. Plus in April, Hayward is 50% from 3 and Harris isn't bad.

Be ready for long rebounds (a la Orlando).

Got to try something. Feed Al and stand around = 4 game sweep.

So, I watched the 1st half of the 2nd game before I was too disgusted and turned it off.

I noticed that Harris was going under the screens when defending Parker. That was my original suggestion. And it really seemed to help. Where Parker was killing us wasn't in the half court, it was in transition. Harris can't stop Parker in transition. I doubt anyone can. You need two players working together to guide him away from the rim. Another problem I'm seeing with Jefferson. He's just not getting back in transition fast enough to help stop Parker's dribble drive. But, there are 3 other players on the court who can also get back and help on defense. So, I'm not going to put this all on Jefferson, they all need to get back and stop the ball.

Oh I also noticed Harris only when under the screen when Jefferson was in the game. When Favors was in briefly, Harris once again was going over the screens.

Can't go under the screen on Gino, but, I think doing so with Parker is the best option, at least when Jefferson is out there.

Now we just need a way to stop Parker on the break, simply making baskets would help a lot. When you shoot 35% you give a lot of transition opportunities. So, that's one simplistic way to stop the break. I'm really not sure what else can be done other than telling folks to run faster. Maybe you folks have some ideas on this.

But, I like the adjustment on Parker in the half court. If we can make a similar adjustment in transition I think we have a shot at winning a game.
