Opening Night Grades

Trey freaking sucks. Wave him now and get Cotton or someone else already.

Burke was bad tonight, but he was bad in a different way to what i remember so i'll give him a couple weeks to make a decision.

Probably just the optimist in me.

Hood and Hayward should be lower because their play cost us. Had Hood hit 2 of those 7 threes he took we would have won.
Hayward got outplayed by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. 13 points aint going to cut it. 50% at the line from our "leader" is not ok.
Hood did give us good assists, but he has to hit his shot to be an effective starter. They'll be back, and both will lead us, but
their performance was not acceptable tonight.

We forgot to grade 2 people.

Booker (F) - Jackass suspended in a preseason game...geesh....
Synder (C-) - Regardless of how we got there , we were down 1 with the ball and 17 seconds left. On the road you always take the last shot there or at worst a shot with 1-2 seconds left for a tip. That ball should have been in Haywards hands for a drive or dish. Not a pull up jumper by Burks with 8-9 seconds left. Even if Burks nailed it we would have lost. DUMB DUMB DUMB

These are some really poor grades! I thought guys played a lot better than that. For instance, Hayward's defense was really good. Neto played really really well for his first NBA game. Hood and Burks kept the Jazz in the game with their scoring. Joey Crawford gets an F- and should retire immediately.

Don't forget Neto's super ****ing weak PNR defense on a huge 3 by Reggie Jackson late in teh 4th quarter that put the Pistons up 6. I'm pretty sure that is when Neto got benched.

I haven't had a chance to rewatch the play yet but I don't think Neto should have gone over the screen. Reggie Jackson isn't exactly a knock-down 3 point shooter and we were having trouble keeping them out of the paint.

I'll give two grades:

1. Snyder: C-

I don't know why you don't use a defensive unit in the last 24 seconds. Sub out Alec and Hood. Put in Millsap and Johnson. Plus, his team was NOT ready for the Pistons to take a quick shot. Caught totally off guard.

2. Jazzfanzers who thought we shouldn't sign a legit piece in Free Agency: F

It's bloody obvious to me that we are one player short of a well-stocked roster. That's all I'll say about that.

Well, right now it does look like management has fooled themselves about TB too. That was horrible last night and all the happy talk about improvement is not looking good right now. Early yet, but still.

What's funny is that giving Burke a D is being generous.

I think an F would be generous.

Fitting though - it was about this time last year when I started looking at Burke in a different light.

Utah played in Detroit and Burke acted like a complete jackass after a Jazz win because he played horribly in his homecoming game.

This performance was even worse.

They looked a little off. Probably because they haven't played a game in a while, unlike the Pistons. I bet they look a lot different tomorrow.

I can't get behind Burks trying to do it all by himself at the end of games. He was great but we need ball movement.

Don't get the terrible ratings for Hood. He got a ton of assists, and played with energy on both ends. His outside shot just wasn't falling.
Good is supposed to be our knockdown shooter so it's warranted.
Hell even one 3!!!

Burks could have hit 1!!!
If anyone other then just Neto, the guy who is billed as our worst none big shooter could hit a three there is a much different outcome. We need to trade for 3 of specialist. I still remember the impact Korver made the moment we traded for him.

Lol. I gave him a Z

Hayward C+ I expect more from him on both ends of the floor.

Burks B He has to play more team basketball.

Hood B- He played a good game overall.

Favors A- Outstanding game. A little passive offensively down the stretch.

Gobert C+ He is not yet the Gobert we were used to admire last season, especially defensively.

Neto B+ Being his Nba debut he played a solid game. He has to dish more assists.

Burke D I think not being in the starting lineup demotived him.

Elijah Millsap C- I’m still convinced he is not an Nba player.

Ingles C He didn’t do much. The Jazz bench needs more skilled players.

Lyles no vote.

Quin B- Winnable game. He sat the starters too long in the 4th quarter. He could prepare better offensive schemes in the last minute.

Hayward gets a C-... should have owned Morris last night. He is not a good defender. Started really aggressive then went waaaay to passive.
Burks B... Had some good moments for sure and then some fairly clueless ones.
Hood B... Just make a damn 3 and it's a pretty good game. He is the best on our team at getting his own shot. Was excited by him.
Favs A+... pure beast mode... hitting his jumpers, so patient on offense. Great defense inside and even better when he got switched out. Might be our all-star.
Gobert B-... I have elevated expectations. He should have come over harder when Jackson drove... He had been getting burned on the dump pass when guys weren't rotating, but you still have to make the right play. Was a bit out of control on offense a couple times.
Neto B+ Super solid and he looks so calm on his jumper. I don't expect much, but he's already exceeding what I had hoped.
Quinn B... Hayward was off, but he is our best overall creator. He needed the ball not Alec on the key possession. Burks isn't as good of a decision maker even though he got a good shot. Thought we needed to take better advantage of our mismatches on offense namely Favs on whoever was guarding him and Hayward vs. Morris.
Burke - I... not sure he even showed up, but at least he didn't start chucking.

Refs - F. Not to be that guy but the refs were terrible. Gobert's charge was terrible... the guy stuck both hands out because he didn't want the body contact and they still gave Gobert the charge... should have been an And 1. Drummond quick tapped three jump balls and it was obvious... got called for it once. One of them led to a three pointer off the jump. Hood got fouled on the game tying three. It is almost impossible to cleanly block long jumper unless you take the ball out of the air and the ball reacts totally differently when that happens. Again it was fairly obvious based on the reaction of the ball. They were just so inconsistent.

Bolerjack A++ called two long twos as threes in the first half and generally seemed confused by the whole game of basketball. He was in midseason form.

Naos, I agree with your statement about being one player short. I wonder if we agree about what kind of player the jazz are missing. I tend to believe Lindsey has assembled and retained a very nice group of complimentary players, just as was his job in San Antonio. But he has not yet delivered or discovered the star. The NBA is built around stars, and the Jazz's woes closing out games is just one demonstration of how they miss a star.

The trouble is everyone is looking for a star, so they don't come easy or cheap. Give the jazz credit, they almost had Harden. They attempted to move up for Wiggins (or was it Parker). They might have made a phone call about Johnson. Lindsey can't force the other team to trade, no matter how many assets he has. I feel like the current Jazz assemblage is just another stop gap until the Jazz find the ONE, but I don't think he is coming in FA.

Well, for last night one player that would have brought us the W is Dante Exum.
