Paul George will sign extension with the Celtics...only if Hayward signs too

Nope... cap holds for 1st round picks (last year and this year) plus roster spot holds of $815k per spot under 12 spots.

They need to clear around 2.5 and it's tricky unless they trade Bradley, Crowder or Smart. They could trade Rozier, Mickey, Jackson, and get one of the first rounders to wait (again I don't think they have to... I think they could both say no... we want to come over now so renounce us or offer us). they can obviously do that, but they still have some gymnastics to do.

So my math is missing #3 and 4x$815. That's still less than $70 right? Hayward's max would be $30?

The first rounders from last year are around $4M and Tatum's is 5.6M plus the 62 doesn't include Jackson and Mickey who they could decline, but then would have to add $815 for each roster spot vacated... basically they will move Crowder or Bradley or Smart once they get a commitment from Hayward.

The margin was so close part of the way they sold moving down from 1 to 3 was a lower cap hold... the $3M decrease hurt em on the math.

Okay. So renouncing those 2 low level guys probably puts it within a million.

Thank you for the clarification.

Well, I would love Smart or Bradley rather than nothing.

So would other teams and they'd move them there... for assets. Danny Ainge is not a charity... he's a pirate.

Honestly, would an expiring Bradley even get more than a lottery protected pick?

No, but they would take a first rounder rather than the nothing we would give them... he's a pirate. It's all or nothing with Hayward...

Who really believes this... pg is so enamored with Boston he's going to bypass a **** ton of money and has already agreed to if gordon Hayward comes.

Bitch please

You know what I told her? You know what I told her? I said biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch!

So the Celtics can take Hayward into their cap space with a max or near-max offer. They can then turn around and trade for Paul George. The problem arises when they ask Paul George to sign an extension with the Celtics rather than become a free agent next summer. Paul George can only be extended starting with a 20% raise beyond his current salary, which would end up around $7M short of his max salary next summer. The Celtics' next move would be to clear more cap space so that they can use it to raise PG's current salary, such that an extension gets closer to his max. And to do that, the Celtics would have to trade out a couple more players, thereby reducing their depth somewhat.

The Celtics may be willing to gamble on Paul George without an extension. They may feel they can convince him to stay with Boston at the end of next year.

However, the pitch to Hayward is that he can join a superteam in Boston including Paul George. If Hayward signs and Paul George bolts to LA (like he's said he will), then Hayward is left high and dry with an aging IT and Horford and a couple young players. In other words, Boston would be asking Hayward to take the risk that Paul George signs and extension or re-signs with Boston. That's a risk that Hayward doesn't need to take.

In short, I don't see why Paul George should be willing to forego his options in free agency next year. He has no real motivation to commit now. Of course, Paul extending his current deal would be convenient for Indiana and for Boston, but it's his decision.

Separately, I don't see why Hayward should take the risk that Paul George might not stay in Boston after next season. He's not the guy who should risk being left holding the bag.

Be aware Hayward

What a terrible, misleading headline. From the story:

Hell-bent as he is on signing with the Lakers, George also won’t close a window of opportunity. So if the Cavs can convince Pritchard to either take on four-time All-Star forward Kevin Love or send him to a third team in exchange for more suitable assets, then George will play his heart out alongside LeBron James and remain open to the idea of re-signing next summer if James were also to return. Or, perhaps, George could leave for Los Angeles with James at his side.

Ditto for the Celtics or the San Antonio Spurs, teams that could fulfill George’s desire for title contention and thus put themselves in the running. And should the Lakers come along and trade for him early to ensure he doesn’t fall in love with another team, then so be it.

George wants to win or be in LA.

Go get Paul George. Then re-sign Hayward. Then go win. Win and the rest will follow. Who thought vets would chase rings in SA? No one. But SA won and the rest followed. Go win.
