Hayward's demeanor = Kosta Koufos last year

I wish it was only that bad last night.

At least Koufous was active on both ends of the court - yeah, he'd look like a chicken without a head running around a lot but you can never say he gave up on anything.

On offense, Hayward clearly gave up on some plays last night. He seemed to spend a lot of time on the opposite side of the court from where all the action was taking place. Sure, sometimes the play calls for that; but you can tell by his body language he was like "they're not going to pass it to me so I'll just stand here". Watch Kyle Korver on the court for 5 minutes. No matter what the play or where he is on the court, he is constantly trying to get open or create a passing angle for his teammates.

I'm not making a value judgement yet, the kid is obviously suffering from a bit of culture shock; but you can't play that way at this level.

Hayward's just about the only one last night that I saw that looked almost completely confused about what he was doing. He wouldn't go up hard to the basket, then when he did it completely bricked off the board.

I've been on board with Hayward since he got here, but the comparison to Doufus is too apt in last night's game. I think he'll do better, obviously (can't do much worse), but his learning curve might be higher than I originally thought. He was "guarding" Hedo last night, who can obviously light it up, but he'll face much worse pretty soon.

And I thought Miles looked pretty good. I don't think we're the best in the NW on the wings, but I'd say we're improved over last year at least. And if Fes keeps a little of that fire in the belly we're majorly improved at the 5 with him and Big Al. I'm not sold on Watson yet, but I'm guessing the "vet" vitamins should kick in soon.

Harpring ronbooning something about "The City of Utah" was the highlight of the night.

When did Hayward guard Hedo at any point last night?

Exactly.

thats the point where was he when hedo was dropping those 3 pt long range bombers inhis face? Probly too busy counting money he doenst even deserve for the 9th pickand being a bust. hello gordon this is the nba and the last time i checked the 3 pointers ar worth the most out of any of the shots unless they have 4 pointers now! hmmm suprised they did'nt teach you that at butler. oh well all you care about is u got your honda acord so now ur just laughing at the bank.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but at least two of those 3s Hedo sank early in the game were off of Hayward's rotation (which he obviously didn't make). I couldn't tell b/c of the camera work, but I assumed he was the one Deron was getting on after the second shot dropped.

And I caught the Karl Malone quote from Harp last night too. How long do you have to live in the City of Utah before you start calling it the State of Salt Lake?

See, I read in the Trib about how bad Hayward's defense on Turk was, but the thing is (and I could be wrong here), I'm pretty sure Sap had the Turk assignment at the beginning of the game. The announcers even talked about it, how it might be tough for Sap to guard a 4 who plays the perimeter, shoots the 3-ball, and is really more like a 3.

I think Hayward did fine for the most part last night, especially in the later half. One of his drives into a layup, he was definitely no-called on. Again, as with other games, I feel that if a couple more of his shots would have just gone down, he would have been lauded as playing great.

His pass to CJ on the perimeter, his feed to DWill inside -- these were pretty spectacular passes and I don't think you see most rookies make passes like those (especially rookies who are Forwards). I'm not going to have my hopes for Hayward dashed yet.

The only downside is that he was definitely pouting a bit when things didn't go his way. It is just one game, just gotta play through it kid.

Exactly. I thought that was Millsap's problem and so did the announcers.

He has a high B-ball IQ, so he will learn that type of stuff quickly.
