It's not a matter of what I would prefer. The question is why is it more acceptable to insult someone's intelligence rather than their physical appearance? Both are to a large extent outside of the person's control, but they can both be improved by the person with work and or help from the medical community.

No real mention of maturity. Pretty much sticks to things that would be deemed offensive to most people. In fact that term is included in one of the definitions.

I imagine it would have been more accurate to state that they are immature rather than idiots, if commenting on maturity was the intent. Either way, I think it could be deemed offensive.
 
Only if the context is "I'm NOT saying this to insult your intellect, but rather, your maturity. You're an idiot." That's the ONLY way I could see context mattering. But thats not even really relevant because your still saying what your saying. If I said "I'm not saying this to call you fat and ugly, but rather to call you worthless. You're fat and ugly" I'm still calling you FAT and UGLY!!!!!
