Pick or Trade: Zach Lowe on Jazz Future

Really good article, very exciting that the Jazz are coming up on that 'crossroads'. I think the Jazz need to focus a lot on internal growth, another offseason with Quin's system could do wonders for every player. Plus who knows how much Gobert, Exum and Hood will grow this offseason too
 
Id rather trade the 11th pick to Boston for 15 and 26 or Houston for 14 and 29 then take a flyer on George Lucus becoming the pgatf. 1.96 meters with 2.2 meters wingspan and absolutely huge hands. Then we take like Devin Booker at the 14 and let he and Hood fight for starting spot up shooter position.
 
I really don't like a lot of the suggestions in the article beyond Khris Middleton, Wes Mathews (if recovering well) types.

I don't want anyone who is 29. In today's league, very few seem to be the same player at this age unless they're legit superstars, or their roles have preserved them.

If we're adding someone old, but not thinking we are going to contend immediately, we are skipping steps, and burning picks that were painful to get in the first place.
 
Barnes isn't that good and he's going to get a huge salary bump soon. I'm not sure if those that like him a lot have watched him much. He's not noticeable on most games. He doesn't fit much of what we need IMO namely he struggles to create for others.
 
Lowe mentioned "You don't use your #11 pick on a back up big". How true is that statement? Didn't OKC use a similar pick on Steven Adams? How about the Celtics when they picked Kelly Olynyk?


Having said that what I would do would be:


1) Sign either Tomic or Pleiss in the offseason as our backup Center.

2) Draft a potential starting wing, if we got really lucky draft Stanley Johnson. Or trade up with the assets we have and grab Hezonja or Winslow.


That will plug our gaps in the roster. Johnson/Hezonja/Winslow have the potential to turn into a solid starter in 2-3 years time when Lowe said we should be peaking so that is PERFECT as well.

I dont like barnes because he creates, i like him because he has good size, athleticism, shoots well, is a good teammate. In a passing offense, creating becomes less important and unselfishness and shooting becomes the new premium!

A backup big on a rookie salary with potential to be a starter is one thing. Trading for a veteran with less upside and bigger salary is another.

This is funny because I was going to make a trade thread with the Jazz and Pacers. With Booker and Burke for George Hill. For many of the reasons Lowe stated. It would largely rest on how Bird and management feels about Trey's long and short term potential and whether or not West and Hibbert opts out.

I like Hood more than Barnes. Better playmaking ability. Barnes might be a better starting 4th/5th option though because of his physical size and defense.

We would have to include the lotto pick.
 
Hood is just so criminally underrated. We'd be lucky to get him at 11 in this year's draft. . .
 
I don't think trading this upcoming lotto pick is "skipping steps". It's not like we are NOLA who traded 3 picks in a row and gave up on the lotto after busting on Rivers. We have a ton of young draft picks who are still developing. Trading the pick would probably be the less risky and smart option if we can get a starting caliber player without giving up too many piece (Hood) other than the current pick and filler.

Why? You think someone will be available at 11 who is way better than anyone at 15 AND 26? I understand you are the draft expert around here so ill defer for now.

Personally I think George Lucas could be the best player out of this draft and he'll go in the mid-20s.
