So they want to make a reality tv show out of a one way trip to mars. Call me crazy but I don't think you could just pluck a few survival hacks off survivor and send them to live on Mars. I can't imagine they would even make it a week on the ship. Let alone an 8 month trip, and a permanent stay.

What I do know is, I will be glued to the tv, and will betting on who snaps first.

Well, my company, The Space Pirates, are planning to host the 2020 Olympics in the Andromeda galaxy. I hope it pans out.

Fingers crossed.

It's a link now.

I like the last paragraph about NASA sending supplies until they're "self-sufficient". How would they be self-sufficient? Would they grow crops? Hunt beasts? Produce their own oxygen?

I would imagine they would have to build an atmosphere containment shelter. It would be amazing if we could figure out a way to eventually grow crops in the martian soil.

Plans already exist, duh.

Here's the instruction manuals.

They are very good. I've been mildly obsessed with Mars ever since.

If you were able to build air tight enclosures you could easily grow/have enough plants, fruits, vegetables and a few small animals such as chickens. The main problem is water and fuel for power.

Me too. I hope I live long enough to see man land on Mars. I think I will check out these books.

I say America lands on Mars no later than 2035. That is 23 years. I think most of us will be here still.

I wonder if they would send a team on a one way trip or find a way to return them. I can't imagine being one of those people sent there. It would be exciting, but scary as hell too.

This guy, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Zubrin has come up with some practical plans for sending people to Mars...and getting them home.

In short there will be supplies sent ahead of the manned mission. Hydrogen(for rocket fuel), Oxygen and water will be produced ON MARS using the Martian atmosphere. The fuel for the return trip will be there before the explorers leave Earth. They'll go, set up some pod-like shelters, do some research and exploration, then return home when the planets are positioned favorably for a short trip.
