Playoff Format Change?

God I hope so! Id love to see some of the West v East matchups throught the playoffs instead of tge rinse and repeat of the last few years.

Utah v Boston instantly comes to mind.

That would be nice if they made a change but I dont put much stock into the commissioner saying they will look into it.

Especially after they just changed the all-star game and completely avoided the real issue. Silver seems kind of incompetent.

They should definitely make several changes to the league to compensate for the imbalance between conferences. 1-16 seeding seems obvious but selecting all stars without regard to conference seemed even more obvious, and they botched that.

Silver is widely regarded as the best commissioner in any pro sports league.

He is looking into shortening the season as well. The change made to the all-star game was fine and will make it more fun going forward.

I think he is great.

They should add a 3 game series for seeds 7-10 for the 7th and 8th spot(1-6 get a bye bottom 5 to the lotto).

Accept that there are tiers in the NBA. Most of the best series' are going to be closely ranked teams. Increasing the number of games slightly for teams that won't go deep anyway isn't a big deal physically for the players.Increasing the number of good matchups is good entertainment. Increasing the opportunity for players to get experience in a do or die game is good for development.

I don't want to watch a 10 v 1 all that much but a 10 v 7 would be interesting.

I like to think of him as the least crappy sports commissioner. Just because the other guys also suck, doesn't mean he is good.

It's nice you think he is great, but he isn't. I've watched the game for 35+ years, and the officiating over the last 3 years is so bad, there was only one other period I remember it being that bad, and it was under Stern during the late 90's and early 2000's. It was so bad, that people actually argued the officiating wasn't fixed in the Lakers/Kings series, and that is was just bad officiating. A lot of people knew that was rigged officiating long before Donaghy blew the whistle, but people were so used to such lousy officiating, they made themselves believe a rigged game was just incompetence.

After that Lakers/kings scandal, Stern tightened the ship and kept it that way until Silver took over. All you have to do is watch James Harden initiate contact and then shoot free throws, and you can see there is a serious problem with how the league is being run.

There are some good things about Silver, like shortening pre-season and getting rid of 4 in 5's, but in terms of how the game is played and officiated, the league is in the worst shape it's been since the dark days under Stern.

The problem with commissioners is that they represent the owners. Their main concern is to make money everything else is a distant 2nd. A good league would have a co-commissioner with equal power and he would be put in place by the players to represent them. Or even better 3 with one looking out for the fans. It wont happen but it would be nice.

I wouldn't go drastic, just say 1-6 or 7 from each conference and best records afterward. Not too interested in cross conference matchups.

The league should really drop two franchises. The talent pool is spread too thin with 30 teams, and too many players are getting stupid money.

If they pared back down to 28 teams, and reduced the games to 70, the competition would be better and the product would be worth more $$. There would also be fewer injuries, and the rationale for resting players would dissipate. They would eventually make back the lost revenue with a better product.

it would be great for us the viewers...

it would actually be awesome to see rather than the same dull format especially with this ****show that west v east has become.

Silver has been great... Not sure you are giving him enough credit. It is pretty damn hard helping NBA owners (billionaires who are or think they are the smartest guys in every room) and players (who are extremely confident and in some cases delusional about expectations) agree.

He listens and has made all the simple changes fans and players have wanted. The other stuff is coming too... this stuff is political. He will need to convince half the eastern conference owners that this type of reorganization is good for them... it will take time.

Silver da best.

There's about 15 teams that would definitely oppose this.

I agree this is the challenge... though he just got lottery reform through and small markets were said to oppose. He could get this done and it would be great.

Even if he convinced them of each conference gets 5-6 teams (or maybe division winners) and the rest is up for grabs. Could also make the top seeds pick their opponent (in order of regular season finish). So if GS wants Orlando the first round they know the travel will suck.

I think something will get done, but it will be a year or two... I just can't wait for the Jazz Celtics series where Gobert eats Haywards soul.
