Post Free Agency LoPo Plan

Someone please enlighten me on the grand plan for 2019. Please, somebody tell me

Jazz want to win 50+ games this year, get to the 2nd round of the playoffs again, and recruit a 2nd-tier free agent like Tobias Harris, Jimmy Butler, or some other dude that makes us a 56-win team. They're maintaining quality depth and roster flexibility while watching to see if they have a 3rd star player in Exum (a reach, I know, but they're making that bet). Meanwhile they're hoping that the juggernauts that are the Warriors and Rockets fall off a bit.

Jazz sign a big free agent and add to the core... I’m sorry there were no meaningless salary dumps from teams that aren’t trading picks and aren’t likely looking to be that aggressive dumping their salary because they can just waive and stretch those guys and they have pockets that are deep AF.

Plan B... if it presents itself...If a team decides to move on from a player on an expiring deal or a player with a semi bloated salary that is a better for for us we can acquire said player and re-sign then in the offseason.

Plan C... if those don’t work we can sign guys to one year deals or take salary from teams at that time and try again in 2020... because we can likely get max space then.

Rockets just fell off a little. They lost Ariza. That hurts their 3s and D.

Also adding Butler to Mitchell and Gobert is a killer combo.

Also very likely that in that season the Warriors no longer have Thompson. He’s gonna get paid.

I'm fine. I'm happy with what we did this summer. I'm just trying to maximize the odd man out (Burks and either Udoh or Jerekbo) to get an asset. We need to turn expirings into a bad contract and a first before the season starts.

I fully expect this entire team to stay intact for 2 more years. I don't think we will overspend for a guy like Tobias Harris. If we wanted him, we could use the 1st we acquired above and expirings at the deadline. But I still think this roster is the next two years.

Or. . . the Jazz package Burks, Sefalosha, Udoh and Jerebko ($24 million) plus draft picks for someone like Aaron Gordon or Otto Porter at the deadline. A young guy with upside that actually fits the core moving forward.

Some star will become disgruntled or some team will have buyers remorse on a guy that could actually have a future here.
1. No one is going to give up a 1st in a trade for any of our expirings right now. The good FA's are already gone. And our "expirings" aren't expirings until the next off-season.

2. Lindsey's goal is "win now." We saw that with the Allen pick. He wanted a rookie who could contribute right away. So I don't see him wanting a bad contract. Those days are over.

3. I completely agree with Ellis and I've posted the same idea many times. Lindsey really has 3 choices at the deadline.
a. Your plan: take on a bad contract for future pick(s). Whatever we'd get would be highly protected. But a lot of teams will be able to do that next off-season. So the return won't be very good.

b. Bid on free agents next summer. I just don't see any of the top FA's beating a path to Utah's door, though. Certainly if there were interest then you waive Favors, renounce the rights to Rubio, etc. Whatever it takes to clear enough cap space. However, the date to guarantee contracts for the following year usually precedes free agency unless written into the contract otherwise. Dennis did that with Thabo, Udoh and Jerebko. I wonder if he did the same with Derrick and Raul.

c. Use the expirings to trade for a veteran at the deadline. Some teams will be looking to rebuild. Others will be looking to cut costs or realign rosters to bid on free agents. Players will be available. I think this is Lindsey's goal. He can get a starter or 6th man and still keep the roster intact (except for offloading Burks and some combination of Jerebko, Udoh and Seflosha). Depending on the player, he can add the 2019 pick and maybe another first. I'd certainly do that for Porter. For a player like Love, expirings and just 1 first). Not really debating who to get right now. But I think this option is the best way to improve the roster because, like I said, I don't think we're getting the likes of Thompson, Butler, etc.

For the record, this whole idea doesn't work because Exum signed for $11 instead of $9.

Also, to be clear, the entire premise of this thread is to get a pick to use in a future trade or to simply draft instead of just hoping to lure a big 2019 free agent which I personally believe is unrealistic.

If we wanted Tobias or Butler or Gordon, we would be better poised at the deadline with expirings and the NY pick than expirings and our pick.
