So the dust has settled. We have made our decision in terms of our free agents. Favors is back. Neto is back. Thabo is back. Exum will be back (we have his RFA rights and nobody has money so he's probably back). Some of you will be shocked at me saying this, but I'm glad they are all back. I have had a change of heart about where we are. Everybody loves everybody. It's a cool family thing going on. Considering the current mess of the NBA with the Warriors and super teams, I love that we will stick with what we have. Let's embrace this roster and ride it out for 2 years. I don't see a perfect free agent or trade fit for the next two years and that includes Tobias Harris. 2019 summer will be a free agent bloodbath of overspending. Let's think ahead...
Yes, let's keep the same roster in place for the next two years. Some of you are going to ask - don't we need upgrades? Probably, but we don't exactly what yet. Don't we need a stretch 4? Probably, but maybe Crowder, Ingles, Thabo and O'Neale can provide that when we need it. We would love to make improvements, but those improvements aren't available right now. Let's roll with what we have and maximize our future.
The best assets we have right now are expiring contracts. They are stronger than our pick if used correctly. Within our close knit family, there are 3 guys which stick out as expendable: Burks, Jerekbo and Udoh. They are expendable on the court. It would hurt to lose these guys in the locker room, but we just brought Neto, Favors and Thabo back to continue the family atmosphere. Udoh might be the hardest to miss of those 3, but most would understand him not returning considering we brought back Thabo and Favors.
I think we need to trade with New York. I know I've brought this up before, but we need to do it for 3 reasons - us, them and the NBA. I'm not even going to propose the entire trade, but I will say this - we take either Courtney Lee or Noah and pick up a key asset for our future. That asset could be Frank Nkilitina ("Donovan's best friend"), draft picks, whatever.
Why for Utah: our roster is set for this year and next. We should get a future asset like Boston, Philly or another strong front office would do in a similar situation. Get an asset which could lead to something bigger down the road. If we trade expendable expirings, we keep everything intact which is necessary.
Why for NY: they want to add a big free agent in 2019. Look at the issues LA is having with Deng - if they can dump Noah and/or Lee NOW, they can make moves in 2019 without being held back. Nkilitina nor their 2019 1st is more important than adding a Durant, Kyrie and Butler, or something else big next summer.
Why for the NBA: the league is reeling right now with the West East imbalance. The Warriors are going to become awful for business. The amount of hate thrown their way this year will be legendary. And when they probably win, I think many will think it's time for a change. New York will be THE prime location to reboot for one of the NY stars. My money is on KD. If NY has the money, I think KD is going. He'll be able to create a new legacy away from the bandwagon one. If for some reason KD doesn't bite, there are already rumors of Butler and Kyrie wanting to play together next year. The NBA needs the East to have numerous strong teams, and this is how it could happen.
For example, we could trade Burks, Jerekbo and Udoh for Noah and Nkilitina. We could also get a 1st round pick swap from NY for 2019. So how would Noah and Nkilitina impact our finances, check this out (based off a $9 million per year deal for Exum):
2018/19, 2019/20
Gobert $23.5, $25
Noah $18.5, $19.3
Favors $16, $18 (TO)
Rubio $15, TBD
Ingles $13, $12
Exum $9, $9
Crowder $7.3, $7.8
Thabo $5.25, $0
Nkilitina $4.2, $4.9
Donovan $3.1, $3.6
Neto $2.2, $2.3 (TO)
Grayson $1.75, $2.3
Bradley $1.7, $2 (TO)
O’Neale $1.4, $1.6
TOTAL: $121.85, $105.5
Salary Cap: $102, Estimated $109
Luxury Line: $124, TBD ($130?)
TO= Team Option
(Didn’t all options for guys we know we’ll keep)
So hypotheticals -
- If we want to keep Rubio in summer 2019, we have plenty of money necessary to keep him. We only have $105.5 committed in 2019 with this deal.
- If we wanted to add Tobias Harris in 2019, we could simply decline Favor's option and look at doing a sign and trade using picks. If he really wants us that badly, we can figure it out.
I'm going out of town a few days. I look forward to the replies and even the bashing.
Keep this team together for two years. See what it can do and wait for the current NBA dust to settle. Get assets while we can. Go Jazz.
