Post Free Agency LoPo Plan

So the dust has settled. We have made our decision in terms of our free agents. Favors is back. Neto is back. Thabo is back. Exum will be back (we have his RFA rights and nobody has money so he's probably back). Some of you will be shocked at me saying this, but I'm glad they are all back. I have had a change of heart about where we are. Everybody loves everybody. It's a cool family thing going on. Considering the current mess of the NBA with the Warriors and super teams, I love that we will stick with what we have. Let's embrace this roster and ride it out for 2 years. I don't see a perfect free agent or trade fit for the next two years and that includes Tobias Harris. 2019 summer will be a free agent bloodbath of overspending. Let's think ahead...

Yes, let's keep the same roster in place for the next two years. Some of you are going to ask - don't we need upgrades? Probably, but we don't exactly what yet. Don't we need a stretch 4? Probably, but maybe Crowder, Ingles, Thabo and O'Neale can provide that when we need it. We would love to make improvements, but those improvements aren't available right now. Let's roll with what we have and maximize our future.

The best assets we have right now are expiring contracts. They are stronger than our pick if used correctly. Within our close knit family, there are 3 guys which stick out as expendable: Burks, Jerekbo and Udoh. They are expendable on the court. It would hurt to lose these guys in the locker room, but we just brought Neto, Favors and Thabo back to continue the family atmosphere. Udoh might be the hardest to miss of those 3, but most would understand him not returning considering we brought back Thabo and Favors.

I think we need to trade with New York. I know I've brought this up before, but we need to do it for 3 reasons - us, them and the NBA. I'm not even going to propose the entire trade, but I will say this - we take either Courtney Lee or Noah and pick up a key asset for our future. That asset could be Frank Nkilitina ("Donovan's best friend"), draft picks, whatever.

Why for Utah: our roster is set for this year and next. We should get a future asset like Boston, Philly or another strong front office would do in a similar situation. Get an asset which could lead to something bigger down the road. If we trade expendable expirings, we keep everything intact which is necessary.

Why for NY: they want to add a big free agent in 2019. Look at the issues LA is having with Deng - if they can dump Noah and/or Lee NOW, they can make moves in 2019 without being held back. Nkilitina nor their 2019 1st is more important than adding a Durant, Kyrie and Butler, or something else big next summer.

Why for the NBA: the league is reeling right now with the West East imbalance. The Warriors are going to become awful for business. The amount of hate thrown their way this year will be legendary. And when they probably win, I think many will think it's time for a change. New York will be THE prime location to reboot for one of the NY stars. My money is on KD. If NY has the money, I think KD is going. He'll be able to create a new legacy away from the bandwagon one. If for some reason KD doesn't bite, there are already rumors of Butler and Kyrie wanting to play together next year. The NBA needs the East to have numerous strong teams, and this is how it could happen.

For example, we could trade Burks, Jerekbo and Udoh for Noah and Nkilitina. We could also get a 1st round pick swap from NY for 2019. So how would Noah and Nkilitina impact our finances, check this out (based off a $9 million per year deal for Exum):

2018/19, 2019/20
Gobert $23.5, $25
Noah $18.5, $19.3
Favors $16, $18 (TO)
Rubio $15, TBD
Ingles $13, $12
Exum $9, $9
Crowder $7.3, $7.8
Thabo $5.25, $0
Nkilitina $4.2, $4.9
Donovan $3.1, $3.6
Neto $2.2, $2.3 (TO)
Grayson $1.75, $2.3
Bradley $1.7, $2 (TO)
O’Neale $1.4, $1.6
TOTAL: $121.85, $105.5

Salary Cap: $102, Estimated $109
Luxury Line: $124, TBD ($130?)
TO= Team Option
(Didn’t all options for guys we know we’ll keep)

So hypotheticals -
- If we want to keep Rubio in summer 2019, we have plenty of money necessary to keep him. We only have $105.5 committed in 2019 with this deal.
- If we wanted to add Tobias Harris in 2019, we could simply decline Favor's option and look at doing a sign and trade using picks. If he really wants us that badly, we can figure it out.

I'm going out of town a few days. I look forward to the replies and even the bashing.

Keep this team together for two years. See what it can do and wait for the current NBA dust to settle. Get assets while we can. Go Jazz.

I'm fine. I'm happy with what we did this summer. I'm just trying to maximize the odd man out (Burks and either Udoh or Jerekbo) to get an asset. We need to turn expirings into a bad contract and a first before the season starts.

I fully expect this entire team to stay intact for 2 more years. I don't think we will overspend for a guy like Tobias Harris. If we wanted him, we could use the 1st we acquired above and expirings at the deadline. But I still think this roster is the next two years.

So your plan is to waste Gobert prime and get worse?

Oof, no.

Also the roster isn’t set for two years.

Next summer Kazz could walk away from Rubio, Favors, Burks, Neto, Udoh, Sefolosha and Jerebko. Half the team...

I think you are intentionally trying to come up with horrible scenarios.

Our roster is set. How do you not get that? Look at this summer - we re-signed everybody to a two year deal. We brought back Thabo. We aren't going to drop Neto, Favors and Exum for a guy like Tobias Harris. You think we are going to let Rubio go? Cmon man. Its not gonna happen.

In these contracts, we gave ourselves flexibility just in case of injury or a superstar demanding Utah. I'm not worried about either scenario. We are keeping these guys through 2019/20.

And how does getting Noah and a 1st make us worse? Burks is going to sit behind Exum, O'Neale and even Grayson. Jerekbo behind so many others. Udoh behind Gobert and Favors. Even if we simply pay Noah his contract the next two years to just go away, the NY 2019 1st rounder is more valuable than those 3 expirings OR 2019 cap space when so many teams have cap space.

Its not affecting the roster at all. Its being opportunistic. Its smart.

Or. . . the Jazz package Burks, Sefalosha, Udoh and Jerebko ($24 million) plus draft picks for someone like Aaron Gordon or Otto Porter at the deadline. A young guy with upside that actually fits the core moving forward.

Some star will become disgruntled or som team will have buyers remorse on a guy that could actually have a future here.

It’s NOT set for two years.
By design.

This is the last year for Burks, Thabo, Udoh, Jerebko and Rubio.

Favors and Neto are both fully non guaranteed next year.

Now sure, some will probably back. But it’s open and flexible by design.

Not our fault you don’t get that.

I would love to do that for Porter.

I would love to do that for Porter.
They’re going to be in the repeater tax here pretty soon, and there’s been rumors that they prefer Oubre to Porter. For his new contract, he was a disappointment for a lot of fans (although his advanced numbers are great.) Oubre needs a new contract next offseason. There could be an opening at some point before the deadline for Porter to be on the trade block.

I love when other people disassemble a Lopo trade thread so I don't have to.

Here is my new plan that is exactly the same as every plan I had before... it is genius except neither team would do it.

Yeah, because Orlando and Washington just really want to get rid of Gordon and Porter for our pick in the mid 20's.

Funny the hypocrisy of what people think is realistic and what I know is realistic.

I don't make bets, but if I did, Favors, Rubio, and Exum are here next year. We aren't going spending next summer

Hahahahahaha

Haven’t you been paying attention? 2019 has always been the plan.

Truth is we have no idea whatsoever what will happen next offseason. There are a ton of variables with or without injuries. I would say it is a very safe bet that next year we look different then we do this year and not just tweaking around the edges. There is a reason DL has given himself flexibility with several contracts.

Just over a year ago. . . this was the Jazz roster. . .

C: Gobert, Withey, Bolomboy
PF: Favors, Diaw, Johnson, Lyles
SF: Hayward, Jingles
SG:
Hood, Burks
PG:
Hill, Mack, Exum, Neto

Nine out of fifteen spots were turned over in less than a year.

Rubio, Mitchell, Bradley, Sefalosha, Jerebko, Udoh, O’Neale, Crowder and Stockton all filled those spots, plus Niang was picked up on a two-way halfway through the season.

C: Gobert, Udoh, Bradley
PF: Favors, Crowder, Jerebko
SF: Jingles, Sefalosha
SG: Mitchell, O’Neale, Burks, Allen
PG: Rubio, Exum, Neto

DL will always push to make this roster better when opportunities come. He’s not afraid of throwing money and/or draft picks at problem spots. He has a vision for this team and relentlessly chases it.
