Put Your Thinking Caps On

Cavaliers GM Chris Grant hopes to be able to use the team's $14.5 million traded player exception before it expires on July 10. "I'm hopeful," he said. "I'd like to use it. Certainly with (Cavs owner) Dan (Gilbert) and his support in the final process, it would be great to use it. We don't want to take on a bad contract. We don't want to put ourselves in a spot where we lose flexibility, but certainly we are hopeful and we are going to try to use it and maybe put it into play in the draft or a few days after the draft, too." Grant explained the Cavs could actually accept $14.6 million in salary with the TPE ($14.5 million, plus teams can add $100,000 to make a deal work). "Any combination of players that are waived or traded can fit into that slot as long as they don't exceed ($14.6 million)," Grant said. "In a trade, you have to trade something, but you don't have to trade dollar and dollar like most trades. We can trade a second-round pick, the rights to a player, a first-round pick, any combination of those things. You can (trade) a player who makes $1 million (for) a player who makes $14 million. It opens up an array of possibilities. Certainly with the high picks, it opens even more possibilities." News-Herald

What would it take for the Cavs to take on Okur and Bells contacts, so we could spend the money savings on going after restricted or non-restricted free agents. No way they compete for a playoff spot next year probably, so Okurs expiring would not hurt them. Who knows he might get healthy enough to help them during the season. What draft picks or player combinations can we use? Would we want to trade for there number one pick this year or next year, if so what would it take? What ideas can you come up with to help the Jazz? The following is a list of free agents we could go after from the savings of losing Okur's and Bell's contracts:

Ok who can think of the best plan for the Jazz to improve the quickest, or do we sit back and take our draft picks this year and next, while waiting for Okur to drop off to add another player?

They will probably go after Mayo with the exception via a sign and trade. I don't think they would have interest in a 32 year old player that hasn't played in essentially 2 years. But KOC could dangle Okur and CJ which they might bite on if nothing else transpires.

I don't think the Cavs will have the opportunity to do this. With a lockout looming on July 1, the exception will likely expire before it can be used on a free agent. I think they will have to use it by June 30, or else risk losing it.

I still don't see them taking Okur and Bell just to be nice. Jazz would have to hand over some assets to grease the wheels on that trade.

I agree. Guess you missed this "What draft picks or player combinations can we use?"
I didn't miss it, just didn't have time to get into that much detail. I was just responding to the idea that Clev will try to use the TPE in free agency. They will have to burn by June 30 or they won't get it.

Still no clear thoughts on what the Jazz should do if they wanted to try to deal with Cleveland. Trading to get cap space is risky this year. For example, the Jazz could give up a pick to compensate Clev for taking Memo, but the new CBA could change so much that they don't get cap space or a TPE out of it. If that happens, the Jazz would have given up Memo and a pick for nothing. I'm also underwhelmed by that list of free agents.

No one seems to want to put their thinking cap on, so here is my thoughts on the matter.

Would you give up Okur, Miles and this years 6th pick for Cleveland's number one next year? They will finish in the bottom 3 probably. Don't like any of the free agents? With the money cleared we could probably sign Nene (center for Nuggets) or Marc Gasol (center for Hornets).

That would give us the best small forward or shooting guard on the board at 12 this year, Nene or Gasol and Cleveland's first round pick next year. The draft is loaded with good big men in next years draft.

Imagine Nene or Gasol to go with Jefferson, Favors, Millsap this year as our bigs, and getting Harrison Barnes in next years draft.

2013 team
Center - Jefferson, Nene or Gasol
Power Forward - Favors and Millsap
Small Forward - Harrison Barnes (Clevlelands next years pick), AK (If resigned cheap) and the 12th pick in this years draft (Terrence Jones I hope)
Shooting Guard - Hayward, this years 12th pick if we go shooting guard because we resigned AK and our next years draft pick
Point Guard - Harris and next year's Golden State pick

Championship by 2014/2015 anyone!

I thought that you could only trade 1 player plus picks, rights to players, and cash, when using a trade exception?

So, heres an interesting idea. We trade Memo, our 6th pick, & the G.S. pick for there pick this year. They might bite becasue Memo's contract will be paid by insurance, plus expiring and they might be able to get some assets in return. Utah could use the pick on Irving and then use there 12 pick on Burc or Hamilton. While having enough cap space to go after Chandler, Affalo, Nene, Gasol, or Deandra Jordan. O,r maybe 2 of those players or 1 and then resign Ak.

But, it just depends on the new cba. I do also see the Cavs doing a draft day trade using there exception. Hope its with the Jazz!!

This list is a bit old. Still has Perkins with Boston (also he signed extension with OKC). Also Splitter is unrestricted already? Dont think that is right. If so he could be worth looking at for a backup C. Have no idea why San Antonio does not play him more especially in this Memphis series.

I like the idea but Gasol/Nene are not going to be coming off the bench for whoever they play for

I think Splitter has another 3-4 years on his deal. And I use to live Bartlett and Im so glad, to see Memphis, taking it to the Spurs!

Yeah, the world has turned upside down. Grizzlies may win a series and Jazz not in playoffs at all. But if DWill trade payoffs we could be contending in a couple of years. I am a G'town person myself-hanging in the hood.

I don't want to pay someone to take Okur. I want someone to pay us for him. A rehabbed Memo has value in trade. The one caveat is I would use Memo in a predraft deal as a salary equalizer.

I would pay someone to take Bell. But if I was KOC, I'd be ringing up contenders in the offseason. I don't think Bell is washed up, his contract is affordable, he just plays too much.

Just depending on the new cba. I can see Memo and his contract returning some type of role player or draft pick (s). What if the Bucks called and said we want Memo for Maggetti & our pick? What would you guys do? Ask for Irasolva instead of the pick and make a deal? Thats what I would do.

You never trade an expiring for bad contracts.

So you don't think that would give us another great piece in Irasolva and add to our weak bench? And Maggetti's got 2 years left.
