Why didn't he go to college for a year and then enter the draft as a one and done? I know that he talked about going to Indiana and play there and I know the Boise State coach really wanted him but why did he basically take the year off. Some of the conditioning issues would have been mitigated to a degree if he had played a year like Wiggins or Jabari. Or he might have played himself into a second round draft status too.

Because by not going to college he knew he would be a top 5 pick.

If he went to college and didnt play well then he would have hurt his stock and not gotten picked as high/lost money.

too risky

I believe there were rumors that he wouldn't have been able to play college ball, (like Kanter), and he didn't wanna deal with that whole mess. I'm sure PKM knows more, as UK was recruiting him, along with UNC.

Maybe what you said above was true.

But what i said is also true.

was he quite certain to be a top 5 pick without playing college ball? The answer is yes (he has been mocked in the top 5 forever)

Could he have have hurt his stock playing college ball and struggling or getting hurt? Obviously he could have.

How is that false?
Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I heard him say something to the effect he came over intending to go to college and then saw his name popping up in the top picks of the draft. He and his parents then decided to not have him go to college.

There are quite a few players who thought they could improve their draft position by staying an extra year, had disappointing seasons and dropped like a rock.

obv it worked out fine for him... he got picked 5... most college players couldnt dream of going top 5.

iirc kanter couldnt play in college because he had been getting paid to play basketball already before college.

Idk if exum has been getting paid but if he has then he would not be allowed to play college ball

Yup.
Smart move regardless of the reasons why

I never heard that was the case. But if Hantlers has the info it would be an interesting read.

Not concerned, conditioning is all on himself and how bad he wants to succeed. He's very young and I'm sure he will be working hard on this.

I hate this board sooooo much but can't stay away. I'm addicted to the pain and frustration.

He skipped because he was a lock top 5 pick, you don't risk falling or getting a career ending injury in college to move up a spot or two. Period.

Plus, why put off your dream and your earnings for a year (risking injury the whole time) when the rules allow you to avoid that. I'd have liked him to be more seasoned, but there's no way he's a Jazz if he does. Even if Utah had ended up with Smart, Ranfle or Vonleh, there's very little chance the Jazz pick top 5 for awhile (unless that GSW pick is golden.)

The rumors about him were that he was testing off the charts in his drive and competitiveness. He is going to Australia to practice and play with his NT. I hope that he returns as soon as that is over and busts his butt in the gym working on his shot and cardio.

I'm sure he wasn't getting paid $$$ to play because both Indiana and Boise State wanted him. I suppose he could have ended up like James McAdoo.
