Question - Who do you pick if the Jazz get the #1 pick?

With the #1 pick, the Utah Jazz pick:

  • Kyrie Irving

    Votes: 29 59.2%
  • Derrick Williams

    Votes: 20 40.8%

  • Total voters

I wasn't necessarily saying that it's a lock that O'Connor has Irving #1 on his board (I merely used Irving as he is the consensus #1 pick as of right now by most "experts), but my main point was that if we get the #1 pick, KOC will use it on whoever he has as his #1.

Yeah, but lets think hypothetically. O'Connor has the 1st pick in the draft. Let's say his man is Kanter,Knight, or someone who is probably going to be available at #3. At the #2 and #3 draft slot there are two teams who want Irving. Couldn't O'Connor start a bid war for the pick between those two teams if he knows his guy is going to be there at 2 or 3?

I think it's definitely a possibility but I don't think you'd get much for swapping #1 for #2. In that scenario the other team would have a good idea that we don't want Irving and they might give up something for #1 (future 1st rounder, 2nd rounder - which is better than nothing) to secure Irving. However to trade #1 for #3 you could probably get something much better. I trust KOC and he might not be able to pull something off like this, but I'm sure it's much harder to do than we realize. But let's be honest - if Stern picks a Jazz ping pong ball for the #1 pick, he's throwing it back in until he plucks a Cav ball from the lot.

For those who think KOC should trade the #1 overall pick - there's a reason the top pick hasn't been traded in over 15 years. Either there's a future franchise player in the draft who's so promising that the #1 team would be foolish to pass on him, or there's nobody great in the draft that other teams would risk overpaying to select. The #1 overall selection carries such pressure that other teams are much more willing to overpay for the 2nd pick because it doesn't bring as much pressure should the pick fail.

If Utah wins the lottery, I would tell the world that we're taking Irving before Stern changes his mind.

If Utah gets the number pick, Ill just be one happy Jazzfan. And I think they might beable to get a great amount of value for either the 1st or 2nd pick. Becasue of the drop off in talent from #2-3. Wouldn't surprise me to see the Bobcats offer up both there picks to get a higher pick. And I think I can see Sacramento trading there pick. And drafting Jimmer with a later lotto pick.
