Ridiculous ESPN trade for Paul Millsap

An insider article posted a number of hypothetical trades for Paul Pierce that were designed to be somewhat plausible. However the proposal to send Paul Pierce to the Utah Jazz was downright insulting.

Pierce to the Utah Jazz for Paul Millsap and future draft pick or Enes Kanter

The Jazz have an overabundance of frontcourt players. They traded for Derrick Favors and drafted Kanter No. 3 overall in 2011 However, they lack a wing player with Pierce's skills and ability. Millsap, though undersized, is one of the top young power forwards in the league. He makes shots, plays extremely hard and is a terrific rebounder. But the Jazz's frontcourt depth makes Millsap expendable. Pierce would give Utah a professional scorer who would fit well with the team. He would space the court for Jefferson, Favors and Kanter and can be that clutch player in the fourth quarter the Jazz lack right now. If the Jazz would rather keep Millsap, then a package of Kanter and the Jazz's 2012 second-round pick (No. 53 overall) could work.

Impact: As previously mentioned, these deals with the Jazz would also include some ancillary players for cap considerations and Pierce's salary of $15.3 million. As previously mentioned, the Celtics would probably also want a draft pick -- in 2012 or beyond -- with Millsap. But the Jazz would not have to break up their talented frontcourt and just decide who is more important to their future, Kanter or Millsap. In the 6-foot-11 Kanter, the Celtics acquire a strong, young interior player with high upside. In Millsap, the Celtics get a moderately priced player ($13.9 million through 2013) who just happens to be one of the top young power forwards in the league.

Is there any fan that would consider either of these trades for Pierce (even assuming more salary was sent back to make them work under the cap)? It seems like Pierce is only a good decision if you're trying to win the championship essentially this season. Why would he even be on Utah's radar?

The fact that someone even sat down, professionally, and wrote Pierce for Millsap AND a pick or Kanter is simply absurd. Boston is, at best, going to get mediocre value for Pierce.......did I mention "at best"?

Why not just try a Pierce for a time machine and the entire OG Dream Team trade while we are at it?

It'd be REALLY ridiculous if it included a sign and traded Fesenko.

But it doesn't fit into the Jazz' financial vision. An old Pierce (what, 36 during 13-14?) making I think 18 mil or so isn't what the Jazz want for that year. And losing Millsap and Kanter ruins the Jazz strength, so whatever you got from Pierce is of course lost with destroying the Jazz' current strength.

Ugghhhhh.

Its pretty funny what some people think. Why would the Jazz trade youth for old player and a draft pick. They would have to give us a draft pick.

The jazz however i think are going to have to make a decision sometime on this situation. I would love to keep everyone around but its not going to work. Favors is the future and I doubt he is going to be happy sitting next year too. Also do we want to let more talent walk for nothing? It only makes sense for the rest of this year.

Pierce is still regarded as an All Star, albeit an aging one. A trade proposal with Paul Millsap isn't a complete insult, but it under represents the role that Millsap plays for the Jazz right now. Most pundits think that the Jazz will inevitably trade Millsap to make space for Derrick Favors. This is a Boston-centric trade idea. The one who's getting undersold here is Kanter.

If Favors or Kanter were ready to come in and be a 15 and 10 kind of player this trade may make sense.

If they can take Jefferson instead (plus whatever that needs to be done to match salaries), I'd seriously consider it. Millsap is simply a much better player for the Jazz in both the short and long term. Maybe Jefferson, Bell, and a pick for Pierce and a 3rd/4th big.

If Favors or Kanter were ready to come in and be a 15 and 10 kind of player this trade may make sense.
Exactly. Corbin did everything he could to give Favors the job and really piss off Millsap. But Derrick played himself out of the starting job and with each passing game, is showing his immaturity. I'd even rate Kanter ahead of him right now. Neither Favors nor Kanter are even REMOTELY close to being starters and #1 or #2 options. That's not to say they won't...I'm just saying they'll both take time to develop. And while they do, the Jazz are lucky to have two bigs who alternate 20/10 games.

I wouldn't even trade Millsap for Pierce PLUS a #1 pick. WHy do so many still value these big-name players when they're way past their prime? Yes, the Paul Pierce of 5 years ago; that's a trade I'd have to consider. But the Paul Pierce of today? You trade away young, good assets for a guy that's 3/4 of what he was? Give PP another 2 years and even CJ Miles will be outplaying him!

Jazz get: 34 year old Pierce owed 47M over the next 3. With a PER of 18.7

Celtics get: 26 year old player entering his prime owed 14M over the next 2. With a PER of 26.7

Yeah this was well thought out.

Jazz are building for the future. A treade for Paul Pierce sabotages that. For me it is that simple to say no.

LOL; just ESPN trying to help out their home team there in Boston. Right now Millsap ain't goin' anywhere outside Utah, unless it's a road game with his Jazz teammates...
Pierce would be a patch, not a long-term solution. A healthy Josh Howard is prolly 'bout as good as Pierce at this stage of their careers.

If Favors or Kanter were ready to come in and be a 15 and 10 kind of player this trade may make sense.

It would? For what, like, the next 50 games?
Millsap is in his prime, and Kanter/pick has serious potential. This trade doesn't make sense to me under any circumstances other than if we thought we could win it all this year... which, obviously we wouldn't.

The OP is right: ridiculous.

I wouldn't for millsap but to add a swap of Harris for rondo and I am more game for a young big. Although I am a pierce fan
Hmmm...Harris + Millsap + a pick for Rondo and Pierce. And throw-ins to make salaries match as needed. That would be very tempting. I'd hate to give up Millsap and Rondo could turn out to be a complete dbag, but there's no question he's a very good point. Add those two and the Jazz just might be instant contenders. Jefferson, Favors, Rondo, Howard and Bell? starting, with Kanter, Burks, Hayward, Watson off the bench. That's a pretty solid 8-9.

Ugh, the Rondo love. You spend a few years playing with 3 HOF-ers, and suddenly you look like an All-NBA player. Just ask BJ Armstrong. Dude was voted into an All-Star game.

Rondo is overrated. Period. He can't shoot the three, he can't shoot the two, and he can't shoot freethrows? What can he do? Pass? Great, so can Earl and at only somewhat lower of a level. Rebound? Pointless? It's like having a center with a wicked crossover. Good for you, but it's not really what we're paying you for.

I just cannot stomach the idea of a PG who can't shoot. Hell, what kind of a NBA player at all can't shoot? Maybe I still have traumas after watching Michael Ruffin, but I just can't make peace with this idea. If there's one thing I really liked about the old Jazz(BH in technical terms, or "before Heyward") was that they could shoot. In 1 or 2 BH when we'd have Boozer, Okur, Kirilenko, Korver and the Devil on the floor all together, you couldn't leave anyone open at 15 feet. Sure, they weren't good for much else, but they were good for that. And I just think, even if Favors develops, and we kept Jefferson under this scenario, you'd have an awful lot of guys in our starting 5 who can't hit a shot dependably outside 10-12 feet. And I just don't want to go through that.
