Kind of amazing that it needs to be explained, but the reason people equate this sort of thing to chess is that it's a very complex game where players are rewarded for the ability to anticipate their opponents reactions to their moves. The idea that you could win this sort of complex exchange by reducing your game to checkers is ludicrous.

DL is not winning by playing a simpler game than his opponents. He's winning by doing a masterful job at the same game everyone else is playing.
