Rookie Contract Power Rankings

It's hard to say with Keyonte. I struggle with the fact that even if Keyonte pops this season, that will just put him in the Anfernee Simons tier. That makes it hard for me to get excited about him.

I think keyonte has all the tools. I have seen him play a ton the last 2 years.
He has a great looking shot, he is a great passer, great ball handler, is great at drawing fouls, is extremely confident, has good size and great athleticism.

Imo the things that have been his biggest issues the last 2 years are his mental immaturity and that the jazz have been trying to lose and held onto to vets that weren't doing him any favors.

I think that this season the jazz are going to try to win on the backs of the young guys. I think this is good for keyonte mentally. I also think that guys usually mature as they age and that immaturity has been his biggest negative.

Ya I think keyonte is going to have a huge breakout year. No hopium involved through since I have never really been a big keyonte guy.
So, if he breaks out he will become a new Sexton but with worse shooting efficiency, worse dribbling and worse defense? And then he will probably want to be paid more than Sexton?

I am not sure how all of that would benefit the Utah Jazz.

I am not going to weigh in on Keyonte's mental state and whether he is overly immature or not, you're probably right in your assessment but I don't know how to judge those things. What I will say is that he doesn't get to the rim enough and I don't know if he has the skillset to ever get to the rim at a good rate. This puts him in the jumpshooter category of player; His shot looks good but is inconsistent. He is essentially a streaky jumpshooter type leaning more inefficient than efficient. If we add to the fact that he ranks worst in the league according to Defensive EPM, the picture isn't good.

The efficiency is somewhat salvaged by his skill in foul drawing and the number of 3s he takes. But those same things also make his scoring incredibly "swingy" game to game. There are games he makes all his 3s, draws fouls, and scores 30. Then there are many more games where his 3 shot isn't falling, he doesn't get the calls, and he is 2/16 and the worst defender on the floor. It's hard to be more consistent with his shot diet because 3 point shooting is just a naturally streaky shot and fouls are ref dependent. It also makes the team winning or losing beholden to whether Keyonte is having a good night or not.

It's just tough and I don't know if there is a better path for Keyonte other than "make more of your shots". It's also worrying that his shot looks as good as it does because I don't know what to tweak to make his shots more consistent, his form looks great. How do you improve your shot if the shooting form already looks great? I don't know.

I will reserve my final judgement on him until I see him fully this season for a good stretch of games. He seems to have a great attitude and wants to do the right thing so I am hoping he can surpass my low opinion of his game and break out year 3.

That you arent a Keyonte guy but somehow rank him above our #5 overall pick that everyone is hyped on.
Ya I think that keyonte experience and age make him better than Ace. I have seen keyonte look amazing in NBA games but haven't with Ace yet.
Same with Kessler. That's why they are 1 and 2 on my list.
Everyone after those two are simply ranked on potential for me. Ace has the most potential of those guys imo and that's why he gets the #3 spot.
Im always big on production over potential.

Good post.
I think that the last two years its been quite obvious that the jazz were trying to lose (not many teams have been fined like the jazz were after all).
I think trying to win and putting out the best lineups possible and building chemistry in those lineups/rotations will do wonders for keyonte this year combined with it simply being his 3rd year in the league and he will get to be one of the veteran leaders of the team.

In terms of expected (average) career peak:

1. Ace
2. Kessler
3. Hendricks
4. Filipowski
5. Keyonte
6. WCJ

7. Brice
8. Collier
9. Cody

4-8 tough to rank; also not sure how to rank 1-2. Bullish on Hendricks (high floor, mid ceiling); still bearish (but hopeful) on Cody.

Where did you get this impression from? Do you mean "wants to do the right thing" on everything but defense? Because I am sure his coaches tried to play better defense but he is very obviously ignoring them. He did not become entrenched as one of the worst NBA defenders due to his physical limitations: he is there entirely by choice.

Your right when it comes to on the court stuff. The character stuff I mostly get from how David Locke talks about Keyonte's attitude and work ethic. Locke has an insider view that I don't have so I'll trust his take that Keyonte is, at least, trying to do things the right way. But just because Keyonte is trying doesn't mean it's going to work out.

Some guys just don't have it no matter how hard they try. Even if Keyonte is working like hell to improve his defense, other players aren't standing still. Everyone else is also improving constantly. Keyonte just might not have enough, but that shouldn't be an indictment on his character.

  1. Ace Bailey
  2. Walker Kessler
  3. Keyonte George
  4. Walter Clayton
  5. Kyle Filipowski
  6. Taylor Hendricks
  7. Brice Sensabaugh
  8. Cody Williams
  9. Isaiah Collier
  10. John Tonje
Collier and Williams are tied tbh. Collier has done much more thus far in his career, but ceiling is dropping. Cody has the slightest gasp of emerged potential given his increased bulk and size on the court.

- George

1. Ace
2. Walker
3. Keyonte
4. Hendricks
5. Cody
6. Sensabaugh
7. Clayton
8. Flip
9. Collier
