Scott Layden to Interview for Spurs' Assistant GM Position -- GETS IT!

Phil said he was happy being retired. I don't imagine that changes, besides, that would undermine Corbin seeing as they said that Phil would be their first choice to replace Sloan. (before that dreadful day)

As for what Malone would teach full time, it would be as a true big man coach. I think he'd do it well on a part time basis, but I doubt he becomes full time.

"I'll see ya in the diamond section!"

Also, that is a tight belt.

Maybe Kiki Vandeweghe is audtioning to be the new assistant coach by working out with Kanter at P3? I was hoping for a defensive specialist in that spot, but Kiki was a scoring machine during his playing days in Denver and Portland.

Back to Scott Layden; it actually makes sense for him to be an assistant GM, he won't be making the final decisions, he will just be handling the paperwork side of things which he has shown he can do, so it's not a bad move for him.

An assistant coach is just that...an assistant. Outside of some bland comments at the half, AC's are expected to keep their mouths shut and be completely supportive of the HC. I don't see Malone EVER being able to do that. Karl as the 3rd assistant would get more attention than Corbin. Probably more than any of the players.

Malone MIGHT be effective as a consultant. But just because he was a great player, doesn't mean he'd be a good coach. How many NBA greats have transitioned into coaching? Of the winningest coaches in NBA history, only one. Lenny Wilkins, was also a HOF player. Sloan was very good, but not great. Nelson and Riley were solid bench players.

It takes a mix of personality, knowledge and people skills to make a good coach. I don't see Malone as having many characteristics that would make him a decent coach. And I certainly don't see him as willing to work his way up within a staff from 3rd, to 2nd to 1st assistant. Karl do what Karl do. And what Karl do is not take orders from nobody.

while i certainly wouldn't go out and hire karl as an AC right this minute, i think the notion that he would overshadow a head coach and refuse to take orders is a bit overblown. he has said publicly that he knows he won't join the coaching ranks as a HC and that he's ok helping the organization in WHATEVER capacity he can contribute.

there are plenty of superstar players who started as 3rd/4th assistants and were fine to quietly do their jobs outside of the limelight. one who came to mind is ewing. he was the main star of one of the most attention-getting franchises in the league for years, and then quietly transitioned to a seat on the bench where he has helped develop some of the league's young bigs. mchale's another guy who was an outspoken star in his day, then dabbled in TV, got an assistant VP job in a front office, then moved to GM, then coach, then back to TV, then coach.

i think karl would make a good assistant, once he gets to a point in life where he can commit to giving up his october through july again. hell knows we could use a big man coach who actually knows what it's like to be a big man. (the main reason i'm not excited about the livingston rumor.)

He isn't working out with Kanter at P3 I'm pretty sure. He is in LA working with Kiki, P3 is in Santa Barbara.
