Should I get Google Fiber?

They are installing google fiber behind my house right now. Anyone from Provo have it? Should I switch? Is the high end tier with TV worth it?

or

Could I get by with a 5mbps connection? Could I still watch Netflix with that? Free after installation would be awesome if it was usable. I could use that extra dough while I finish school.

Just get the 1 gig! 5mb would have been appropriate somewhere around 2002.

I seem to remember watching Netflix just fine back when I had a 6mbps connection. I'm sure it could handle anything I need for school. Free is super tempting. If I spent that money on Jazz tickets, for instance, I could go to 10 more games in decent upper bowl seats.

Netflix sends you a signal that is appropriate to your connection. They say a minimum of 5mb is needed for HD content, but you better not be doing anything else meanwhile. But if you're content with SD content, Netflix says 3mb is sufficient.

Should I buy a car, or keep riding my horse to work?

TIA

Since figuratively you only live a block from work, stick with the horse. The gas is much cheaper, and so is the insurance.

We have currently a 100mbps connection (connection between 85k on the low end, 150+ on the high end). It runs flawlessly. Most people really will not notice the difference between 50 mbps and 1 gbps realistically. As it is I download a 5 mb song faster than I can click on the next song to download, for example. Technically most streaming services run at rates at a max of 10-15 mbps outgoing, meaning if you can match or better that then you will have flawless streaming without buffering. I know netflix runs at 3 mbps for HD content. So if you can average higher than that, then the only thing slowing you down is your own computer, not your internet connection. So anything beyond 50 realistically is overkill. It is a lot like having a $1000 video card to play minesweeper or tetris or something, or paying for a Ferrari when that horse will get you there just fine. For the average user it's overkill and wasted money...for now.

But if you just want the fastest internet you can get, regardless of cost, or if you are getting a great deal on it, then go for it. The biggest plus you will get is fiber does not usually constrain upload speeds, so you can upload those pictures to facebook insanely fast, instead of just regular fast (most ISP packages average about 10-15 mbps upload regardless of download package speeds).

This all changes if you do some hardcore gaming or other bandwidth intensive activities. Some gaming will require higher download and upload speeds to move packets fast enough to avoid the dreaded "lag". But most internet games are built for current standard speeds or actually a little less which are usually around the 25 mbps max range worldwide, but the large majority of the most popular games run very well at speeds in the 5-6 mbps range.

I forgot to tell you my horse bytes, and the gas while cheaper is horrendous. My work's infrastructure does not have a stable so I had to jimmyeatjazz rig one. I also figuratively really live 20 miles from work and can't use the freeway, but have to take the back roads because ole Bessy is not allowed on the freeway.

Sucks to be you. Figuratively speaking of course.

A more apt analogy would be: Should I sell my car and ride a bike to work? It's free beyond the original investment. It may not have the luxuries but it may be worth the cost savings.
