Should The Jazz Target Kevin Porter Jr?

Houston is in a weird spot where they got a lot of talent on the roster but arent exactly sure who is who for them. They also loaded up with some vets, so a lot of dudes are going to be unhappy with their minutes crunch going forward.

Kevin Porter Jr is a player who has always impressed me when I watched him. He is known as being immature and troubled (https://www.theringer.com/nba/2019/6/19/18684292/kevin-porter-jr-2019-nba-draft). The dude is hyper talented though and is a big combo guard.

He's played 4 years in the NBA. He had a OBPM of 1/.4 and a DBPM of -0.8. Those are pretty good advanced stats for a 22 year old guard on a terrible team.

IDK what it would take to get him out of Houston. He is hyper talented, but also comes with a lot of question marks. Houston also has a huge logjam of guards with the drafting on Amen and signing of FVV. Obviously Houston doesnt have to trade him, but it does seem like a decent time to sell on him if they dont want to juggle that many young guys wanting time/contracts.

No. Cavs didn’t fine or suspend him for his actions they did all they could but the kid can’t be fixed so they traded him.

Obviously he’s doing better in Houston because he got minutes but it could turn sour again for him with the new recruits they have. This is the guy who openly complained about PT so I wonder how he can work under Hardy.
If he was on the team he'd probably be the most qualified starting PG option we have (his size gives him the clear advantage over Sexton).

I thought when Quin was the coach they asked JC about him as they had been teammates briefly and the Jazz took a pass. It was a fire sale deal too if I recall.

Brother that was 4 years ago his rookie season.

Things may have changed since then, but there does seem to be a bit of a pattern. It will be interesting to see how he reacts when playing time may be limited. That said, I'd be happy to give the Rockets the 2nd round pick they traded for him or even a couple of 2nds.

PS: not sure what's happening to the spacing in this post, but the link seems to work.

significant concerns about his inefficient shooting/scoring. otherwise he's a good player. but it's just hard to win in the nba when your high volume scorers are below average efficiency.

We seem to have lots of options at point guard and undersized shooting guard currently on the roster. Also have lots of options at the 4 and 5. Im hoping if we add anymore to the roster that we add a bigger shooting guard and/or a small forward.

He was pretty darn efficient this past season. One of the best C&S players in the NBA, got to the FT line.

Sounds like a being on the Rockets issue.

Interesting. I'd hire a low level Rockets assistant or staffer for some insider info if you were taking this flyer. His problems seemed a bit too deep for me but if he has done a ton of maturing then I get it. His contract is such that its a low risk from that standpoint so he has some motivation to be on his best behavior.

I'd want DEEP intel. I think the price would be pretty easy to meet with the other moves they have made I don't see it going super well with Porter Jr. if he becomes second string pg competing with Amen for touches.

Good thing Kevin Porter JR has + 2guard size and is equal length to many SF's.

The star market just seems kind of thin. Next best thing might be looking at these youth talent stacked teams and try to get the guy who is in danger of being cast to the side (ala James Harden back in OKC)
