Should the Jazz trade the Celtics for one of their bigs?

We have the assets, and the insane need for a 3rd big right now. Booker simply isn't cutting it, and he doesn't seem to be improving any more as a player. His contract will be easy to trade (expiring deal). Lyles is young, but could use some slow development under the tutelage of a big who's more ready over the next 1-2 years.

Here's a list of Boston's bigs:

Kelly Olynyk
Amir Johnson
David Lee
Jared Sullier
Jordan Mickey
Tyler Zeller
Jonas Jerebko

I can't see them parting with Kelly or Mickey. That still leaves us with a ton of other choices. I can't really think of another team in the NBA that has so many mediocre-talent NBA bigs that they need to get rid of.

All of their contracts are pretty good, and will probably run out around the time that Lyles is ready to produce consistently.

What do you guys think? Should we go for one of these guys?

Before the season I said it was a good idea to stand pat, and not making any big splashes in FA, so we can assess what we have. And it's helped so far.

With Rudy being gone, it's been showing us the rest of our big depth. So far, Lyles has been a problem on D (he simply can't play the 5), WIthey hasn't been notable, and Pleiss can't even get on the court. Booker doesn't provide a need for this team in the long-term.

I'm thinking by mid-January we'll have to start thinking about making some calls if our big-depth situation doesn't improve, and Boston has to be at the top of the list.

PS: all of these bigs are on excellent contracts except for Lee, who's on an expiring contract. Not a fan of that one, personally, but the rest are pretty dang good. Jerebko seems like one that Dennis would love. Good team defender, has range, decent passer. Sullinger and Zeller both have fantastic contracts.

Really thinking we should target Zeller or Jerebko. Maybe Zeller, because the 5 is the bigger position of weakness.

He's averaging 4.4 points and 1.6 rebounds a game. Would this even be an upgrade?

The dude is 25-- if he could repeat last year's performance (and that's assuming he hasn't even hit his prime yet) on a playoff-team, it would be perfect. He's a competent backup.

Lyles hasn't really played the 5 since a few games into the season. I don't think he's doing a good job defending even as a PF, although I've seen a number of people praise his defense around the forums. To me, he often looks lost, misses assignments, allows too much space for shooting bigs, and isn't strong enough to defend physical bigs.

I suggested trading for David Lee a few days ago. But I'm not sure how salaries work out since he's an expensive expiring contract. But if they do, I bet we can get him for next to nothing.

David Lee is the one I would want the least. His contract doesn't really fit with our team in the long-term. Let's snipe one of their players with 2 years left on their deals (jonas, Zeller, Sullinger, Johnson)

I'd rather try to develop Lyles.

Lyles will still develop. We only have one good PF on this roster. With a PG it's different because we have Exum and Burke (who's proved to be a good backup). Burke >> Booker right now, not close. Lyles will still get development minutes. And this is ignoring the fact that we have zero backups at the 5.

Celtics GM is real tough with trades.. unless he feels he's winning the trade he won't pull the trigger. DL is the same. Because of that it's hard to see how they can get something done.

it doesn't matter, we have the assets to overpay. We have multiple first rounders that aren't even ours-- that's way way more than enough for either player. We all know how much Boston loves draft picks. Helps them make a splash for a big star.

DL will never overpay....

But his contract is expiring. I doubt he will have many suitors, and can probably be had for cheap. He's a capable scorer, and can play with Gobert or Favors.

i wouldn't mind him, at least you know he can put up points and we can probably hide his crappy D well enough
