Have you ever read "Ecoscience", by Obama's science czar John P. Holdren?
That book gives you a massive glimpse into what the science community is trying to achieve.
 
Never even heard of it. That crap would put me to sleep in about 5 minutes. Fantasy sci/fi and Dean Koontz or bust.

Haha agreed.

I've only read excerpts, but the book even says that most of the things done in science nowdays are specifically experiments done on the general public.
