I agree that we should be aggressively looking to improve, but I can't believe anyone thinks we are missing the playoffs next year. Even with the abysmal start we had last year, we likely make the playoffs if we had brought back someone like Jackson instead of future pieces. I think a lot of people are underestimating just how much of a corner we turned last year. To put it in perspective, I believe our road record was about identical to the year Deron took us to the WCF. I'm still predicting we have our best team since S&M next year. Utah gonna shock the world.

You are aware that there is this team called OKC that will have a healthy Westbrook and Durant to start the year this time?
 
In the past, the Jazz have positioned themselves to take advantage of other teams going after free agents. Examples include helping Golden State acquire Andre Iguodala, but taking a first round pick that turned out to be Rodney Hood. The Jazz also picked up Randy Foye from the Clippers when the Clips wanted to clear space for free agency.

The Jazz are well positioned to make trades with other teams during the early free agency period. Apparently Trevor Booker's contract isn't guaranteed until July 15th, so a team could acquire him in a trade and waive him to clear space. The Jazz might be able to pick up a player like Splitter from the Spurs as they go after LMA.
 
The Portland Trailblazers could fall out of the playoff picture along with Dallas if Dallas doesn't put a few significant moves together.
 
The good news is that Dallas may potentially take a step back if they lose Ellis and don't add a capable PG in FA. Even if they get DeAndre Jordan, I could see them regressing without an upper tier playmaker.

Portland could take a SIGNIFICANT step back if they lose Aldridge, especially considering they traded Batum and will not have Matthews for a significant amount of time (if they re-sign). Who knows who they get in FA though. You would think they would be able to add someone of note if they do lose LA since they will have a lot of money to spend.

Those are the only two teams I see falling out though, unless another team sustains a significant injury to a star player. A case could be made for New Orleans with the fragility for a number of their key players too.

OKC will be getting back into the playoffs, so that only leaves 1 possible spot for Utah to sneak in.

We are going to have to have an excellent start to the year. We really can't afford to fall to the back of the race early.
 
Tobias Harris seems like a logical FA move to Portland. That could potentially be considered an upgrade to Batum. They could also go out and get a guy like Millsap.

IMO, Millsap + Harris could be > Aldridge + Batum.

I'm a huge Aldridge hater though.
 
You don't want to over bake the cake and make it dry. Ewww.

We don't pull it out now, and next year everyone has cap space and we aren't able to add any icing to the cake so we are stuck with a dry cake without any icing. Gross.

Pull that cake out while it's still moist and put some damn icing on it.
 
I'd love to see Aldridge on the Spurs just because I'd like to see how he would adjust his game by not being able to a ball stopper and midrange shot chucker.

Robin Lopez was a big part of their defense. He's a free agent too.
