SLC Trip

You going to a jazz game stoked?

I guess Mexican and then clubbing is living a little.

#bathroombreaks

Well when it comes to Mexican food I lived Central America and my ex wife is an illegal immigrant from Mexico. So yeah I've been around that type of food a lot.

As for bars...well I've been to a few of those as well. I'll leave my past at that.

Red Iguana has been around for more than 30 years. They didn't start as a supposedly fancy Mexican restaurant. They did offer some unique, especially for the time, dishes, like their famous moles. Word got around, they had a permanent line out the door and they developed a few dishes that are a little more upscale and intended to appeal to their new clientele. But if you go there and order chicken tacos or cheese enchiladas you are going to get pretty much the same thing you would have gotten in 1985. Which is to say, those dishes are basic. There's nothing fancy about their non-fancy menu choices. They are decent, but nothing special. People who go there and order those items often go away wondering what all the hype was about.

The hype has gotten a little out of hand, but Red Iguana is a good restaurant. Even better if you order the right stuff. Their mole is good. They've been making it since the very beginning. They have incorporated it into several of their menu items and you can buy it on the side. That said, mole is not for everyone. Some people I've talked to were confused about what they were eating. One guy called it a sort of dessert thing. Holy ****, if you eat mole thinking you're having dessert , well yeah, you're gonna be a little disappointed.

My personal recommendations are the Mole Amarillo and the Tacos Don Ramone. My wife get something I can't remember the name of, but its a stuffed park dish smothered in mole. My son likes the chicken enchiladas, but I can tell you, they are basic as basic can be. Nothing wrong with them, but yeah, any other place in that neighborhood (it's the neighborhood I grew up in) will probably have chicken enchiladas just as good or better.

I've eaten at Red Iguana once. I was taken there by a guy who grew up in Mexico City for 25 years before immigrating. He recommended the mole. I hated it and haven't had mole since. That's nothing against RI or the reason I haven't returned. I think it's hard to cook bad Mexican food so it's a price point choice for me. There is very good Mexican and very chef boyardee Mexican. Many of my co-workers love a Rose Park place you may know called Chubby's. I've been there at least 100 times and their slop is nothing short of out-of-the-can trash, yet still edible and enjoyable.

Maybe my palate is refined enough now to give mole a second shot. I'll hit it up next week and let you know since you're such a huge RI guy.

Good info GF. This probably made up my mind not to go. I like mexican food but basic food. Beef enchilades, tacos, beef and been burritos... so we will be eeating somewhere else.

If you want to hit up Red instead of Blue, it's an easy .8 mile walk from your spot. Or, you can take the GREEN TO AIRPORT trax directly across from the arena to cut down on the hiking. The area seems rough, but it's Utah rough. I walk that place all the time with no problems. If anything, the crackheads & hoes are pure entertainment. I had one going off on me the other day at the crosswalk about how big of a *gay pejorative* I was. Not talking directly at me or anything, but it was funny as hell.

If you can handle the price I highly recommend Flemmings in the Gateway. Splurge on a $45 steak and a side or two. They cook a 2" steak to perfection. That's hard to do (go tech).

One last thing, knowing your wife is illegal is just one more reason for me to get driven over amnesty. I know a few people in your position who have a spouse and kids and their partners are banned for life from USA due to too many illegal migrations. It's ****ed up.

She is actually thinking steaks as well instead of Mexican. That's a good tip as we will be at gateway at some point lol.

Also lmfao at "Utah rough". I've seen worse. Also my EX wife is illegal. My current wife is as white as they come.

I agree with most of this.
**** mole. Nasty ****

My favorite Mexican restaurant is La Luna. For my wife and I the combined bill plus tip is only about 15 dollars. Really good food too.

Good Mexican food can be found for very very cheap.

How did this trip go?

I just remembered this was happening at the same time I did a birthday pub crawl Saturday night that made it to 8 bars, maybe some overlapped?

We ended up doing some shopping. I got a bunch of crap for my girls. Hoodies, ear rings, purses, toys...my main pick up is a nice leather jacket. Love it.

Then we ended up going to Olive Garden of all places lol. They nailed their stuffed mushrooms, Garlic Parmesan Shrimp and Braised Beef with Tortollini. Waiter told us how much he hates Utah lol.

Then we hit Keys On Main and had a reserved stage side table. Rocked out. Our tab after a dozen drink was like 60$ lol.

Had a great weekend.
