Slow starts

What is the problem with the Jazz being so tentative at the start of games? It causes them to fall behind by 10 points or more at the start and have to battle back. But that deficit in the beginning has lost them several games already. How can they overcome this?

It would be good if Rudy could develop some inside offensive presence. But it seems he too is often tentative and not going up with authority at times. He shouldn't be getting blocked at the rim. He needs to power those shots up to draw the foul and not mess around turning on his pivot foot and end up traveling. So far this season, his offense seems to have regressed.

Also, Neto needs to get a couple buckets in the early going. Teams are letting him shoot. He need to look to score at the outset. With no offense from Rudy or Neto, the other team can double on Favors-Hayward-Hood.

Anyone have ideas how to cure these rough starts?

Rudy isn't a good offensive player, but it doesn't help to completely avoid him. Which the Jazz do. There are plenty of times where he rolls to the basket and he should get the pass, especially a lob. Hayward is really guilty of it. He doesn't seem like he wants to pass to Rudy at all. Rudy isn't good on offense. But it doesn't help to keep him no good and avoid him. They should have been trying to get him involved last year. So the progression could get started. But they didnt. And they are still not doing it. It's gonna continue to be a problem if they don't work on it. They need to give him the green light to shoot a mid range jumper every once in a while too.

The longer they wait to work on this the worse mistake it is. Last year would have been a great throw away year to work on it. But they didn't. Now we have Rudy still at his lowest offensive level. No playoff run to show for the reason you didn't want to do it. And we got a worse draft pick and picked no game Lyles.

I agree. Not sure why FO likes to hang around 7th, 8th 9th seeds in playoff standing all these years. The middle of the pack in NBA is the worst place to be.

They don't want win bad enough is my guess. Probably just happy running a profitable business.

Jazz had leads and were right there in the 1st Q against OKC and Dallas. It all fell apart in the 2nd.

True, but in the opening minutes, we often are outscored by double digits, then they relax and comeback, so though we are getting killed in the second quarter, we are always playing catch up because of the tentative starts.

I've said it about a million times. If a team falls behind by double digits then the other team is playing better than them. Often, when players know they can beat a team and it's not going to be a knock-down drag-out fight they relax a little. Clawing back from large deficits does not mean there was ever a chance your inferior team was going to come back and win. It means the other team is just going through the motions against an inferior team. Once it gets close enough to worry they tighten up and finish it off.

Falling behind by double digits is not an indication that the Jazz are getting off to bad starts, it's an indication that the teams they are falling behind to are better than they are.

Perhaps, but we also have won games when we were down early, like the Pacers game. How many games have we had this year where we jumped into the lead at the outset? Not many and certainly less than we have won. In last night's game, they should've been up by double digits the way OKC played in the first quarter.

I saw Rudy in warmups last night make several 15 foot jumpers and make them. Never seen him shoot one in a game.

That's something Rudy and I have in common. I have also shot, and made, several 15ft jumpers while goofing off in a gym, and I haven't shot one in a game, either.

Put me in coach, I'm ready!

If Rudy can make 60 or more percent from the foul line, there's no reason he can't do that during live action. He just needs to practice a quicker release. I always wondered the same about AK. Some seasons he was shooting 80 percent from the foul line but couldn't hit a mid-range jumper.

Then you have favors.... Nearly automatic from free throw range during gameplay, yet a poor free throw shooter

If Hood can make 85 or more percent from the foul line, there's no reason he can't do that during live actio... oh, wait. Yes there is. Never mind.

Hard to blame anyone for not passing to Rudy. He bobbles so many passes, so if the ball-handler doesnt see a wide open passing angle where he can deliver a pass Rudy can catch they just dont pass. The one pass he can catch are lobs, and no one on our team can throw good lob passes besides Neto, but defense don't suck into him so the spacing doesnt work.

The Jazz do try to get Rudy involved on offense. It just results in a lot of turnovers because the team is generally bad at passing and Rudy has terrible hands.
