For starters, just because you have a job doesn't mean you aren't holding yourself back.

But your first 7 words of the first sentence in the first paragraph kind of discredits any predictions you make about the future of the industry.

Yes, you can do all of that stuff with a smartphone. Especially if you have a server.

The average home user doesn't have a server, but they also don't do any of stuff you listed.

Like I said, there will always be the exception for someone doing things the average person doesn't do. But snartphones will absolutely render desktops and laptops obsolete for the average person in the near future.

That's why Microsoft announced Windows 8 will run on smartphones. They see it coming.

Watch the video in the first post and then come tell me why the average person would need a computer if they bought that phone.

I hope you realize that you've said this for about a year now and nothing's changed. And that every six months I will bump this thread, ya know, from my laptop, which will not have become obsolete.

I guess huge flat screen televisions will become obsolete too because at some point people will be able to stream live tv right to their phones?

No. But people will connect their smartphones to their huge tv and use it like a computer and watch videos, view pictures, etc.

Oh? What credits you? Following TV shows that only show the newest and trendiest devices? I'm in the real world, making use of real technology for the benefit of society. People like me make the internet work for businesses of all shapes and sizes. I couldn't work on a phone. I don't know how else to tell you that it'll never happen.

I can program on a tiny screen, multi-task and have the processing power to run several powerful applications at the same time without slowing me down? Um, wrong.

And besides, you just proved yourself wrong. "You could do that if you had a server..." so, what's a server? A computer? Hurrr.. way to contradict yourself. You should have said "you could do that without a computer if you had another computer to support yourself.. err uhhh".

FAIL.

The average person as in the person that doesn't need real computing power to do a job? How many people are there that use computers for their job that couldn't possibly be replaced with a phone? Or are you just considering yourself and not everyone else?

What it really sounds like is you like phones and you're jizzing your pants over some video about a new phone, and then twisting it into some fail argument that makes no sense because you have no perspective on how the world uses real-life technology.

I'm going to have to side with Salty here. He's absolutely right, as long as you accept all of the caveats he's introduced as well as the rapidly growing set of superfluous straw men.

For the "average" user (which is everyone except for those who have posted in this thread, from what I can tell), a smartphone will do just fine.

I'm not sure how this post proves you were right. I still use my laptop just like 90% of the technologically fortunate.

And the number of people who agree with that statement will continue to shrink every day.

To be intellectually honest, the time frame Salty originally said was 5 years from now. Now being one year ago. SO he has 4 years for his prediction to come to fruition.

To be intellectually honest, the time frame Salty originally said was 5 years from now. Now being one year ago. SO he has 4 years for his prediction to come to fruition.

To be fair, I'll give him nine more years and he'll still look like a moran.

The funny thing is, I love Salty. He seems like a good guy and knows his ****. He's just stubborn as a mule.

I make a living off my laptop and work for people that own small businesses. No way in hell any of us would have a job if laptops/desktops didn't exist and phones were the only option. I obviously wouldn't have a job doing this about 10 or so years ago, either. When there's a market for it, it'll exist, and my market will never change as long as I continue to do what I do. Nevermind people like me being essential to the internet being what it is.

10 years ago is in no way what the market will look like in another 4 years.

And there absolutely is a huge market for smartphone programmers, right now.
